Q: Can this be used just as a carpet cleaner on its own?

No you use it first by spraying over the dirty parts leave it for at least 10mins then use the carpet detergent in the machine. It works very well. Would recommend to use first especially in the hall

Q: Do i need to use the rug doctor machine or will a regular hoover do?

I have used this as a pre-treatment before using the Rug Doctor machine. I would imagine that a regular vacuum will not work.

Q: Can I use it on a 100% white wool rug?

If you read the product description is says that it is 'wool friendly', so that would suggest that you can.
