Are the brushes hard or soft?

The brushes is hard, we have increased the hardness on the former version.

They are pretty sturdy and do not bend easily. But you can bend them if needed.

Is there a secret as how to open the key ring - I can't seem to pry it open?

Common man… all black key ring just pull the silver portion up opening the loop …
