Q: Does this test for salmonella

This is not a test kit. It is simply grows out bacteria commonly fond in dirt, on your fingers or other surfaces that kids might want to explore.

Q: How long will will these keep after bacteria is present?

You should be able to use them for demonstration purposes for some time, however the bacteria will continue to grow. So if you are using them for a science fair and you want to take them with you, you will be able to. Just keep in mind that if you are growing bacteria it will smell and not good.

Q: Will these work at room temperature or is heat needed for growth?

Room temperature should be okay if it is not cold. Ideally needs >70F, we had to keep it close to a lamp because we were using it in Jan in Texas.
