Q: Do I need to wash these before using?

I would. I used the Medela steaming bags that you can get to clean the equipment. I don't steam the bottles any more though, they seemed to crack.

Q: Are these compatible with the Freestyle?

I have the pump in style, but I believe all the accessories can be used between all Medela pumps so you should be fine

Q: Will these fit the Spectra S1?

These will fit the narrow neck flanges (medela and spectra compatible), but not the wide neck flanges that come with the spectra pump. I actually prefer the medela valves over the spectra duckbills, so i use the narrow neck flanges with the spectra pump. There is a long backflow protector you can buy.
