Q: what is the diameter of the head on this item?

Caliper shows 5/16" diameter at the magnet

Q: Is it good for picking up loose coins?

Coins are not magnetic. So no it will not pick up coins.

Q: will it rust? I want to use it for canning.

I have lab and canning magnets. For yes pulling out HOT LIDS from water to seal quickly. I recommend you search for canning lid magnets for two reasons over this style. ONE they do not collapse thus they do not get wet inside and harbor bacteria etc. Which when it comes to canning you definitely do not want organisms bacteria or otherwise as possible contaminate. Two due to the fact the magnets usually made for use in lab or kitchens for canning purposes can be sterilized themselves. I have this style and use for finding pins and small screws etc. and yes even my tiny metal die cutters when I drop them. I do not want a super strong magnet for the pins and dies because they will get magnitized and occasionally with the dies I need to unmagnetize them via an electric demagnetizer. Nothings worse than to run a word via loose letters through a cutting machine and find that 2 or more moved together due to their magnetizim. LOL. Anyway take my word for it having to try to dry this out even left fully extended for a few days may not completely get fully inside and so there it might rust. Since mine does not get wet I haven't had that happen but I also wouldn't use it for canning. And I've been canning for 49 years now.

no it doesn't. as a note, I found this weaker than the advertised 3lb hold
