Does this version contain any expansions? Which ones?

The standard version also comes with the three eras in this one (gold, progress, and turmoil). There are two separate expansions (age of darkness and age of enlightenment) that also each contain 3 eras. It sounds like the main difference between this deluxe version is some upgraded components and an improved box storage system (the storage system in the standard version is pretty awful--I threw out the tray and printed some tuck boxes out that I found on boardgamegeek.com for this game).

Do you need the base game of Rivals for Catan before you purchase the deluxe version or is the deluxe version the original plus expansions?

This Rivals for Catan Deluxe game is a stand alone game only for two people. Regular Catan, I believe is for 2-4, and you can buy a different game that is for more than five people. This version is just a card game; a way for two people to play a game. You don't need anything else to play this version. As far as I know, there aren't expansions for this two person card game.

What is the difference between the game and the catan card game? Are there more cards in the old version?

I'm not sure about the original card game because I have not played that one. From what I see online, some of the cards may be different. But the DELUXE edition of Rivals has 9 promotional cards, a couple of which really make the game interesting. It also includes trays to hold the cards while you're playing - it really keep things neat and easier to play.
