Q: Is there any design on the mold? It looks plain- just wanted to make sure.

Nope, it's simple square design but durable. I normally just paint on designs and such so you have the freedom to put anything ya want

Q: Will these release if you use Merckens candy coatings or does it have to be tempered chocolate?

Have no idea about Merckens candy coating. I worked with tempered cocoa butter and tempered chocolate only and it was great experience with this mold. I suppose such firm molds are made to work with tempered things only - when tempered chocolate/cocoa butter hardens, it crystallize and becomes a little smaller in size, right enough to be released from the mold. In my experience if the chocolate was not tempered well it sticks to the polycarbonate mold like crazy, it takes hours to soak and wash it.
