How Many Snails?: A Counting Book (Counting Books (Greenwillow Books))

Son is in first grade and he blew through this book (he's above average). Only the last few pages stumped him but overall it was a terrific purchase. The concept is really sweet, colors vibrant. The child will really have to use his/her conceptual thinking to solve the answers. That made it fun for my son too. He especially loved the cupcake page.

This book is great for reading to one or two, but not a group. The pictures are to be discussed from many points of view. It's great to open discussion and talk about numbers.

Excellent book to use in pre - k - 1st. The kids love to count along with the story. Oh what fun.

My grandson loves this book recommended by his first grade teacher... a fun teaching tool we read it every night.

Or small ones do anyway and this book is a fabulous way of tapping into that enthusiasm. The text suggests ways in which each page may be counted but it is no stretch of the imagination to think of endless questions. Recognising sets, similarities, things that are the same and patterns are essential prerequisites for well grounded maths and these skills, along with comparing quantities, developing mathematical vocabulary etc are readily facilitated by this little book. Sounds dull and worthy? Not to a three year old, most of whom enjoy counting! It also works very well in a Reception class. So much can be done with this book.

I was very disappointed with this as I expected it to be a book about counting snails, to tie in with children's interests. It's not. It is about counting, but only one page features snails. Children found the illustrations uninspiring and didn't ever pick it up again to look at
