Small, quick, portable and works right out of the box
I bought the 4TB version to back up 4TB of videos, photos and music off a NAS Box.When the drive arrived, I unpacked it, plugged in the accompanying USB lead into the unit and the other end into the USB 3 port of my NAS. I then began the backing up of my data and to my delight it was doing it at 112MB+ per second. The whole process took a number of hours. After backing up my NAS, reformatting it's drives and installing it's OS I then began the processs of copying the dtaa back off of the external drive back onto the NAS. Again, it worked at full speed.Since then, I have used the drive on my Ubuntu box, Windows 10 PC and Mac with no issues at all. I did format it with exfat so I can easily use it across all devices. The drive is small, and no wider, than my iPhone 11 Max and does not need an external power supply which makes it very portable.I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wans an external 4TB drive.

Extremely happy with this product. Bought two and will continue to buy the same model
I wanted to move away from powered desk top drives and bought two of these in the 4TB size to start with. They were very well packaged and have been a pleasure to use. Small compact and look smart on the desk. I plan to buy more of these so they all match. I'm on a Mac and work with video. I'm sure they'll be good enough to edit 10bit HD video or 4K 8bit, although I have not tested this out they seem fast and reliable enough for that.

Prompt delivery and sound packaging
I bought two drives for two basic reasons; a) portability/travel, b) backing up. My old ones were no longer able to hold all of my data, I needed double the capacity. I read reviews on the web and here on Amazon. I wasn't after the the most amazing thing ever, just a reliable, reasonably efficient drive.I can't remember how promptly this arrived but I was pleasantly surprised by the speed and the quality of packaging, which was necessary because the postie dropped it through the letter flap. The drive is good, and I need it; I ordered one as a test and being satisfied bought a second one; I was using 2 x 2Tb drives, one main one as a backup, and I use mirroring software. In addition to my desktop and laptop I archive everything from confidential, encrypted containers to .raw format photographs, my ripped music all of my documents, scanned files, everything in my life is on my drives and so far I have 1.86 Tb free on my new drives. By the time next year is out I suspect I will need to double my capacity, or buy another 4Tb pair.Performance; the drives seem reasonably swift, and trouble free; there have been no hiccuphs so far, no temperature excesses, all of the mirroring that I have done is flawless. What can I say? I am never confident about storage and computing, never have been since a university mainframe let me down years ago and army kit before that, so I've always relied on my own equipment. I think these drives will do for now, and that's always been my policy. I've seen some negative reviews, there will always be unlucky purchases, and there will always be accidents. After more than a month these drives seem to me to be capable, sound and reliable. In my time I have only ever had one unreliable portable drive, and that was about 18 years ago, I always buy in pairs, I always duplicate everything. Nothing is perfect. If there is a problem I suppose I'll be back to moan, but I don't think that's likely. Fingers crossed of course.... ....I'm still astonished that I have 2 x 4Tb drives as my main reserve and back up storage, and 2 x 2 Tb drives for emergencies, and I can remember 720Kb drives, the big ones that is. Oh bliss. Thank you Seagate.[I have not rated tech support; I have not asked for any, so how can I?]

Dead HDD's are not always dead.
I use a Mac Pro computer. It has a 1TB SSD, and I back it up using Time Machine to an external 1TB HDD. Over the years I have filled the SSD, mainly with photos and videos, to the point where Time Machine didn’t really work.A few weeks ago a decided to replace the HDD with a 4TB version of this device. The change didn’t go well, and I ended up with the new drive inaccessible. Reading the poor reviews (I know, I should have done that before buying), I concluded that my drive had failed and requested a replacement from Amazon. That was accepted and the replacement arrived next day, with instructions on how to return the original (giving me several weeks to do so).I then thought, and decided that the failed device probably contained much information about my life. So I started looking, & discovered a lap top with an earlier version of the OS could “erase” the disk. To prove it I ran Time Machine, this time successfully. I also decided that I didn’t want to return the “failed” HDD.As an exercise, I configured the two 4TB HDD as a single Raid 1 device (meaning that they should, all being well, have identical content). That exercise didn’t go well either, and I wondered if the devices were pulling too much power from the computer. It’s not something I do normally (mains connections are always in short supply), but I managed to find an external power adapter and use that to power the USB hub (which connects HDD’s to the computer). From that point it all worked as advertised (so far) so I now have 2 HDD both containing identical copies of Time Machine files. Attached is a screenshot of the arrangement. All I have to do now is to let Amazon know that was nothing wrong with original Seagate HDD, and I want to keep both, so please charge me for the replacement.I don’t know why I had the initial problems (perhaps disconnecting before ejecting, easily done with an external drive), or why an older version of the OS could do what the newer one couldn’t. I don’t feel knowledgable enough accuse anybody of anything, but dead drives are not necessarily dead, and perhaps my experience might be of some use to others…To Katherine Wade… I suggest you use Time Machine. It’s pretty solid and provides the opportunity to undo mistakes, recover lost files etc. I think it’s fairly intuitive, for what that is worth.

Seagate Portable 4 TB External Hard Drive
Excellent item. Just the right balance in terms of storage capacity and portability - not much larger than a my passport drive.Fast transfer speed, also doesn't need external power - runs from USB 3 cable. Superb!
