Yes, they will fit your 1971 Super Beetle. They can be attached around the headlight outside chrome ring or slipped into the crack between the ring and headlight.

What happens in the car wash?

If they are properly installed they hold up pretty well. They do best on the Classic Beetle if they are attached on the outside of the chrome ring that goes around each headlight. Some car washes have pretty rough brushes so they are not guaranteed--of course touchless carwashes and hand washing are not an issue.
