Highly engaging
I used these on the side of a tall filing cabinet for kiddos that finished assignments early. Special needs students really love them as they are highly engaging.

Magformers are great, but the gears are just meh.
We LOVE Magformers, but the concept of adding gears actually detracted from the overall pleasure of building with Magformers. The gears didn't line up and function correctly if the Magformers construction on which they were attached moved at all. Also, I find that if one really wants to do anything cool with the gears, this starter set just isn't big enough. Most of the pieces are just unnecessary colored plates and the actual gears are limited. One would need much more gears to really have fun with the concept. The original Magformers constructions sets are fantastic, providing hours of fun and my kids never get tired of coming back to. We had the same expectation with expanding our collection into gears. Unfortunately, the kids and I were not impressed with this direction of Magformers.

Awkward and difficult to use
I brought these for my girls for Christmas and we cannot figure out how to use them. I now assume that these are just add-ons to a bigger set, but there was no indication of this on the description or actual box. I wish I hadn't opened it, because I would've definitely returned them. I guess I'll just find a place to donate them at this point.

Great, but you likely need additional parts
Magformers are my favorite toy when playing with my kids. I love the gears, but this set is not for everyone. If you have a lot of Magformers already, you may be able to get away with just the accessory set. Unfortunately, unless you have a lot of rectangles you aren't going to be able to build anything, and few sets besides the XL Cruisers (which won't work with the gears) come with many rectangles. My kids enjoy just lining the gears up in squares attached flat on the floor, but the squares aren't sturdy enough on their own to be able to build up and use these. We have a set of the super squares, so we attach the little squares with the gears on top of them to be able to build up, but even then you aren't going to be able to go around corners (having the crank on the side drive the gears around on top) because the extra layers will put the gears too far away from one another. If you have hexagons, the large gears will be able to go around the hexagon corners. To be able to build around square corners, and have the structure not fall apart as soon as you try to turn the crank, you need the structural stability of rectangles. For that reason, I'd recommend going with one of the other gear sets that includes rectangles. The other option (which we'll probably go with) is to order just a set of rectangles directly from Magformers. On their Facebook page they have a link for a secondary site they don't advertise anywhere else that sells individual shapes.

They were amazing, and my little boy loved playing with them
When I got these, I wondered what in the world I was supposed to do with them. I didn't have any magformer magnetic tiles with me. I'd bought those for my godson. So, I had to wait till I visited him so I could give them to him. Well, I finally did, and his parents figured out how they worked right away. They were amazing, and my little boy loved playing with them, making the gears turn. They want to get another accessory set so they can have more gears to turn together. I'll post a better photo when I get one that shows the gears together.

Disappointed--you can't build with these
These did not work at all. I was excited to add gears to our Magformers for a STEM activity, but the gears were so hard to turn that my Magformers creations immediately fell apart. Even on a flat surface like the fridge they would tear apart the Magformers structure as soon as I started turning the crank, and were hard to turn. The only way I could make it work was to lay the Magformers on a flat surface and hold it down very firmly with my free hand. There is no way my three and five year olds could use these.

Great addition to basic magformers set
My 2 y old is obsessed with spinning things. We have a set of Gears, gears. But these magnetic gears are awesome to put on a fridge or make a cube with wheels on sides.Works well with our basic 14 pieces set.Packable for traveling.I'm glad we bought it. Son loved it immediately.
