This is truly a book for a whole childhood with stories for babies right through to older children and indeed the adults who read the stories to the children. My children were raised on Shirley Hughes, from individual books, nursery ones, Alfie, Annie Rose, Lucy and Tom and Dogger and even when they were grown up and new ones were published I bought those for them too. Shirley Hughes is an amazing writer and artist, truly gifted in the observation of everyday life and its joys and tribulations. I believe children's books with beautiful and powerful illustrations are fundamental as part of their development and enjoyment of life and its experiences. If you want to enrich your children's lives... look no further. Every single book is worth having and will be treasured by children and adults alike.

Bought this as a used book which arrived quickly and in excellent condition, thank you seller. A good selection of stories much better than the separate paperback versions. A nice book to keep and pass on, illustrations are excellent.

This is the first book of Shirley Hughes that I purchased. I didn't grow up with her books either. I bought it after reading reviews and had a peek inside the book. This book is worth buying for the illustrations itself. The stories are very well written too. It shows life, as simple as it used to be with good family values and good times, without focusing on technology and computer games. This is how I would like my children to grow up, appreciating life and picking up good values. This book is very well written, there is a collection of poems as well as short stories. This is a must have book in your collection. It's the perfect book to snuggle up with under covers with your children. It's book that will still be a good read many years down the lane.

When our children, who are now in their 30s, were young they both enjoyed their Shirley Hughes books. This book was bought for our four year old granddaughter and we're sure that she too will get a lot of pleasure reading the stories and looking at the fabulous illustrations which are so detailed and always give rise to lots of enjoyable discussions about what's happening in the stories. This book is quite large and heavy so best suited to bedtime reading rather than carrying around but is sure to be a favourite for years to come.

A really great book. I fell in love with Ir watching a TV program about its drawings. So I ordered some of her books, and I am deleted. The drawings are wonderful and so well done, it is very realistic with a lot of poetry and pure joy! I am an adult, and appreciate those books for the drawings but children will appreciate both the illustrations and the stories. I strongly recommend the books of Shirley Hughes!

Lovely stories and illustrations!

We initially borrowed this book from a friend, but my daughter liked it so much that we had to buy our own copy.Simple stories that seem to relate to a preschooler very well. Wonderful illustrations. This book is being read and re-read over and over again (particular favourite stories from it, that seem to change over time, that is).
