is carpet a suffient base?

Dear customer, the mat should be kept on a flat and firm surface. Mostly, we recommend placing it on the floor (including carpeted floor). We generally do not recommend using the mat on a soft mattress or a recliner chair. The mat has 4 folds, the coils are located in those folds.
