Rocking & Crying - The Complete Singles 1951-1954 Plus ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED SET

The Five Keys are one of the greatest doowop groups. However, this album includes not only their great songs, but many mediocre songs as well, and it weakens the album. Their strongest material, which is mostly their fast 'jump blues' songs, exhibit great originality, strong lyrics, and solid singing from both the lead singers and the back up vocals. Unfortunately, all too many songs here, particularly some of the ballads, are repetitive, with banal - sometimes, truth be told, insipid - lyrics, and not terribly convincing singing. (The backing musicians, though, are solid on every song.) This is not a criticism of the group; all groups have songs that work, and songs that don't work. Rather, this is a criticism of the decision to include nearly fifty songs. If the album had been reduced to 16 of their best songs, I would have ranked the album 5 stars, a masterpiece. As it is, the many mediocre songs bring the whole package down and do a diservice to this great group.

Title is right on. You have to love this music to really appreciate it.
