rOtring 800 Mechanical Pencil, 0.7 mm, Silver Metal Barrel

This pencil is in my shirt pocket and gets used every day at work. I've had it for a few weeks now. I have big hands, and this pencil is not large in comparison to others, but it fits my hand and is a pleasure to write with. The knurled grip is just the right level of grippy, so that it grips well with no slipping, but doesn't make your finger sore if you use it for a while. The rotating mechanism to extend the lead is smooth and works great. Tip movement (wobble), which is apparently a problem to some, isn't even noticeable to me. I'm using it with Pentel Ain Stein 2B leads. It works great and writes smooth as melted butter. No problems with lead breaking inside the pencil, and lead advancement is precise. It's a good product that works and is a pleasure to write with.

This pencil is by far the best pencil I have found for use in my shop. It is well balanced, durable, and fun to write with. The long and narrow tip makes it easy to use right up against a ruler or square for drawing accurate lines. I also like the retractable tip a lot, as it prevents me from breaking the graphite off which is often a problem I have had with cheaper pencils. Personally, I took the clip off so that it slides into my apron more easily in any direction, and since that modification there is nothing I would change about it. Since the body of the pencil is faceted rather than round, it does not roll around, even without the clip. I have since purchased the 0.5mm variant of this pencil and it is just as good as this one.

I have the 600, but the nib ferrule is a little delicate. Not that one should not respect fine tools and treat them with care, but the rigors of work means I need a writing tool on the go more often than not. The 800, while expensive removea that weakness with the retractable ferrule. I carry it everywhere in my pocket. I love the weightier feel of the rotrings, and could never go back to cheap plasticy mechanical pencils again. Sure, it's pricey, but... I don't care. It brings me the joy of using a Rotring out and about, people notice it, and it's awesome as a piece of mechanical design, and a writing tool.

Great pencil, feels solid in the hand and you’ll always feel like an engineer using it. I get a lot of questions about it and it actually matches my MacBook pretty well. The one issue is sometimes the rotating part to reveal the led tip to write or use the pencil will get stuck and you have to treat it gently like a lady to finesse it out.

I have carried this pencil in my back pocket every day for over 6 years. The retractor makes that possible. It has been my trusted companion and it serves me very well. I probably pull it out to use it a dozen times a day. It has been extremely reliable, and high quality. I did have to add a tiny drop of oil into the mechanism a couple years ago, as the retractor was not moving freely, but it was then as good as new. I wonder how many leads have been used in my pencil, it has been a lot! I am going to order more pencils as presents this year, and thought I'd write a review since I'm so pleased with the pencil.

This is my second Rotring 800 purchase after I gave the first away. I have read many of the reviews here and people seem to have an issue with the lead breaking, and this is the exact reason I gave away my first Rotring 800. I believe the problem a lot of people are having is with the 0.5mm lead. This is unacceptable for a top notch pencil. Either do not sell the 0.5mm lead or improve the design. As stated, I purchased this pencil to give it a second go in 0.7mm. I bought this pencil because I had 2 GG1000 pencils break in the same exact way (plastic barrel threads broken). Though the GG1000 served me well, I don't want to buy a $30 pencil every year because it dies. The 0.7mm Rotring 800 I received has absolutely no issues and is a thing of beauty. There is play in the nib, but it is hardly noticeable. I haven't broken 1 piece of lead internally in this pencil as I did with the 0.5mm model. I would recommend this pencil to any pencil aficionados, but it works best for drafting/engineering/math. For writing you may want to look elsewhere as it may not be comfortable for extended periods of writing. A message to the company would be to discontinue the 0.5mm retractable end until a more suitable design is made available or quality control picks up. 0.7mm is more expensive but is easily far superior to the 0.5mm Rotring 800.
