AN OUTSTANDING WORK ON THE MOST CRITICAL PERIOD OF US AND WORLD HISTOY
THE AUTHOR HAS COME OUT WITH AN EMINENTLY READABLE ACCOUNT OF SOCIAL, POLITICAL , ECONOMIC AND CIVIL WAR YEARS IN THE USA. IT REQUIRES EFFORT, CONTROL OVER FACTS( DOWN TO THE MINUTEST DETAILS) AND ABOVE ALL TOTAL COMMITMENT TO WRITE SUCH A CLOSE KNIT, TENSION FILLED ACCOUT OF THAT VITAL PERIOD.ABOVE ALL BRINGS OUT THE PAINS AND PERSONALITY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN AS THE PEOPLE'S PRESIDENT.

No words could do justice to the magnanimity of this man.
While reading this book, I had this feeling, to know all there is, as soon as I can. This peculiar feeling got intense as I read through. The story of the 16th US president, and of the men, who assisted and worked with him while he was at the helm, will have a profound impact on my life, as I live on.As for whats in this book, I suggest you read on. In the end, you'll be gutted, but also inspired by the man that he was. This is, and will always be, the greatest historical biography of all time.

Mind boggling
The best biography I have ever read. This book has stepped up my standard to a very high level. No other book does such a great job on the life and work of great Abe than this one. Dorriss' one of the many masterpieces which beautifully indulges her audiance into the life of Mr. Abe. A must read indeed.

Masterpiece
You will simply be blown away by the breadth of the book and its study of Lincoln. What a towering personality and leader. The world cries out in it’s need for such a leader during the current tumultuous times. But there will only be one Lincoln. As an Indian, certain portions of the book with details of American elections and leaders of those times, can be difficult reading but my suggestion would be to persist as overall it makes for a compelling read.

A Portrait like no other
I always imagined historical narratives to be boring. Well- not true. This book is here to prove it. While all historical narratives are sequential in nature leaving little room to add an element of thrill, suspense, or "edge". Doris does a marvelous job introducing those elements. The book should be thought of as a study in people management with the test subjects being some of the greatest minds in history being led by the very capable Mr. President. While reading the book, one actually experiences those times. You realize how precarious a position you are in when your army is suffering one defeat after another but instead of blaming the opposition, the army chief, the War secretary, you take the blame upon yourself and trust that your trust in these people hasn't been misplaced. But at the same time you don't let people take you out for a spin.Truly this is a study in management rather than a historical narrative of the life and times of Abraham Lincoln and his team.

Non fiction that reads like a thriller
This book is so well written. If you are interested in American politics or history you should read it.

Good choice and may disrupt the reading pace.
I had a habit of reading books in my freetime. But that habit got lost somewhere. Later when I tried to do resume that habit, it just wouldn't work. This book is great in the sense that it made me catch up to my habit (because its intresting). The pace or flow of the story keeps changing. Also the book is well researched. Great option to consider.
