Empowered and the Soldier of Love

Still good
Emp has been a favorite since I first discovered her - perpetual underdog, dogged by macho stereotypes that are way below her, but still she persists. I never thought of "persisting" as a superpower until Emp made it clear. As much as I love her, I don't consider this her strongest volume. This time, the supervilllain has something like Cupid's arrows firing on full automatic, and has melted the "capes" (good guys) into puddles of hormones. Then, while they're all busy inserting knob A into hole B, she attacks. Only Emp and `Jette are left un-befuddled and ready to save the day - not that Emp will get any credit for it.I'll keep coming back, but Emp might be in a bit of a slump. If it turns into a downward spiral, I'll bide her adieu and leave with fond memories intact. I just hope it doesn't come to that.-- wiredweird

A great new Empowered story but not Adam Warren art
Soldier of Love is a great fun Empowered side story. And it is a delight to get Empowered fully in color. But fans should be aware that while Adam wrote this story, he brought on artist Karla Diaz to do the art and coloring. She does a magnificent job. And her art is unquestionably a good substitute. She captures the Empowered look and feel extremely well. (certainly way better than the guest artist for the Sistah Spooky book). But it still isn't Adam's art, which is in many ways the heart and soul of Empowered. The best example I can give is this book feels very much like the guest artist Hellboy stories. Where Hellboy is do defined by Mike Mignolla's art, that the guest artists never feel quite right. But the stories will still engage you.Soldier of Love is an Empowered side story, and is not critical for following the ongoing story in the mainline numbered volumes.

Another chapter in the Empowered saga
This is a lovely, mostly full-color (the main story is in color, the side story is in B+W) addition to Empowered's story. Emp and Ninjette find themselves going up against an embittered "magical girl" who's grown up, and disillusioned with the power she once loved.I'd have given it five stars, but a lot of the dialogue between the "magical girl" and her sidekick is in Spanish. I know enough Spanish that I could puzzle it out but it would be a problem for some readers.

Superheroes In Luv!
One of writer/creator Adam Warren's goofier outings for his Empowered character outside her regular series. While I prefer his own artwork, and he's chosen "fill-in" artists that have been more to my liking, the art in this is pretty competent. Nice to have in the collection, if not necessarily a must-have.

He never disappoints
I came across Empowered back around volume 3 or 4, and had to go back and get the earlier ones. Ever since, I have waited eagerly for every installment, whether a full volume or a special.I'm not a comic book fan. I never read any growing up, nor graphic novels. I prefer reading books. But back in the 80's I just loved Phil Foglio's "Buck Godot" and this series seems to hit the same notes for me.There is great character development in this series, which is pretty amazing considering how little time he gets compared to people writing novels who fail to do this basic step. That development is absolutely necessary for any sense of empathy for the characters, and he manages this easily. The stories are a mix of the ridiculous and the more ridiculous, the characters are absolutely hilarious across the board, even the bad, most evil ones earn chuckles. This one continues all of that, with a nice range of drawing styles throughout. We keep seeing glimpses of some seriously impressive bits of Emp's abilities, and he does a great job of stretching out that anticipation with it all.If you're only going to read one writer's graphic novels, this is the one.

A Comedic take on the Super Hero Genre which is also a little sexy from time to time.
Adam Warren as artist/author has created an amazingly funny and deep comic universe with Empowered. While the art in the main story, "Soldier of Love" is handed off to a more than capable Karla Diaz, it fits nicely with the quirky take on the 'magical girl' genre for this story. Fortunately we do get the high contrast art Mr. Warren is known for in the one-shot story, "Pew Pew Pew" at the end of the book. Generally Empowered is for adult audiences as sexual innuendo is used creatively throughout his work and in a way that I feel drives the narrative. Check it out and his vol. 1-10 of the same title.
