The Treasures of Vintage Material
Since I wrote it, I guess I like it too. Ha, ha. Actually, working on PORN and interviewing all these film directors from the 70s was a great joy. They all had so much fascinating stuff to say.... and they all opened their archives and made great vintage photo material available for this publication. On top of that, the Schwule Museum Berlin (the world's first LGBT museum in the world) also opened its archive for this project and allowed us to use many porn magazines from the 50s, 60s and 70s, that no other library in the world collects. Those images, mixed with the more modern photos, are my personal highlights in this book which describes how gay porn moved out of the shadows in the late 60s and into the limelight with films such as BOYS IN THE SAND. It then chronicles the Golden Age of Promiscuity and examines how AIDS radically changed the porn business in the 80s - and why the revolution caused by the internet generation was overdue. Most people I gave the book to loved it. And it sold quite a large amout of copies. So, it can't be too bad, no matter what I say here.

So so run down on gay porn through the years
A good book, as far as it goes. Mainly about movies, not all the other, often more interesting, formats porn has used over the centuries. Heavily biased by the author's own predilections, (and why not? - porn is such an idiosyncratic thing), the book covers many of the main studios and stars without delving too deep or exploring too heavily what makes porn and its followers tick.If you just like to look at the pictures, there is plenty to look at here and some of the most famous erections of the past 50 years are proudly on display.Diverting but not deep, Porn from Andy Warhol to X-tube is a good addition to the library and a diverting way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Visual spectacular
I have to admit, I've never seen anything like it: instead of just printing full page after full page of porn star photos, the images in this book are fully integrated into the narrative, i.e. the text. Which makes them much more enjoyable. Also, because the narrative is so enjoyable. Instead of re-telling all the ins and outs of porn history - listing all the names and films and studios, and who did what in which year - the author focusses on the larger picture and tries to outline more general trends in the business, starting in the 1950s and working his way towards the present. His easy references to literature and music and musical comedy and opera make sure that porn is always placed in a larger cultural context. And the many many interviews with porn directors past and present give very personal insight into the genre. What I particularly liked were the various historical porn reviews, notably from THE ADVOCATE. They reminded me that it's possible to deal with gay porn in an intelligent way missing in many reviews today. The reviews from the early 1970s are a pure joy to read - for example the BOYS IN THE SAND review from VARIETY. Or the Peter Berlin articles about the "blond aryan". No-one would write such stuff today. In PORN it's all there again to re-explore, and re-evaluate. Judging by the interviews in the book, it also seems that the directors of the past had more intelligent things to say about porn than their modern-day counterparts, who can only lament the changes in the business - and the loss of money they experience. But there are enough examples in this book of how people today make lots of money with online porn and amateur porn. The analysis of that development is quite refreshing, including a chapter on bareback porn. In short, a great book. And yes, the pictures and layout are spectacular. Especially the ones from the 60s and 70s.

Doesn't live up to its cover.
A friend of mine had a copy of this book and based solely on the images within the book, I'd say it's pretty mediocre. The cover is great and I would have loved to have seen more images from the bygone early days of gay porn. Unfortunately the book is full of your typical airbrushed 6-pack porn stars that we've already seen on the internet and in countless other erotic male photography books. There are a few pages showing vintage gay ads, but not enough of that crucial period (70's thru early 80's) to make this book worthy of a purchase. It would have been nice to see more of Joe Gage models (Casey Donovan, Jack Wrangler, etc), some of the old vintage graphics from movie ads to VHS porn, and more images that look like the cover photo (which is, by far, the best thing about this book), but the book gives us more of the usual fodder - Zeb Atlas, Jeff Stryker, meh... boring. There's nothing new here. I may pick this up when I see it on the bargain tables, but for $44.00 it's not worth it.

Impecable y consiso

Hot guys aplenty, over the decades.
This large, attractive book cannot strictly be called a history of porn, yet it does touch on aspects of gay porn over the last 45/50 years, right up to the present day. The focus is largely on the USA, and more recently, Europe as well. Many of the legends are here, including Joe Dallesandro (of Andy Warhol fame, and the model whose crotch famously adorns the cover of the Rolling Stones record "Sticky Fingers",of 1971.) Colt model Carl Hardwick, and the beautiful Bill Henson from 1983 may be two names you remember. Some others include: Steve Hammond, Jeff Stryker, Leo Ford, Casey Donovan, Al Parker, John Davenport, & Lee Ryder, who feature among numerous models now long forgotten. Since porn by its very nature is subjective, you may find yourself wondering why certain models were included, and others left out, as I did. For example, there is no sign of recent new arrival on the scene, the likeable & gorgeous Londoner, Patrick O'Brien. Sometimes those images that do not show all are still well worth the price of the book, such as the Dean Flynn photo from 2010. He wears a grin, and a pair of blue jeans. The man is a masterpiece. Some images date better than others. 70s star "Bruno", with his barrel chest and huge moustache, stands naked in front of a garish wallpaper pattern. Clearly of its time, but now the picture is a sort of historic artefact.A full page (and fully erect)US Big Brother contestant Steven Daigle shows how times have changed. The days of the megastars such as Ryan Idol are long over. Now almost anyone with a handsome face or a good body (or not, tastes are so varied that there is a market for anything now) can show off for the world via the internet. Styles come & go. From the hairy and hung Jake Tanner & Ken Ryker of the 80s, to the shaven and very youthful models such as the lovely Lucas Ridgeston of Bel Ami fame. There is some text, in English & German, with some historic interest, including comments on the terrible toll that AIDS took on so many an actor, and the move toward safer practices in the business. Also here are interviews with some of the well-known directors such as Chi Chi La Rue & Fred Bisonnes. Porn as we knew it is doomed. Video tapes & magazines are no longer where it's at, swept away by webcam footage and free porn sites. For that reason alone this book could itself become a historic item in its own right, considering how fast things are changing. There should be something of interest here for all gay men, no matter what era they remember. This book is printed on quality heavy paper, with excellent reproduction, and the only reason I would not give it 5 stars, is that I find the "history" leans a little too much toward the recent models. Otherwise, fascinating and sexy. A good buy.
