Nice toy to have around my desk to cut shipping boxes from Amazon
It is almost like a power scissor to cut flattened cardboard straight. Handy for cutting shipping boxes you receive from online orders. You can not cut against the bent of the cardboard, or very thick cardboard. This is not for professional use like cutting carpet or roof shingle. Makita does not describe what it can do or can not. But one should be able to see that from the price point, size, voltage (12V), and spec. Good toy for me.

Works Well for Thinner - Medium Pile Carpets
This multi-cutter works well on nylon cut pile carpet, where the pile may be more than 1/4" deep. If you are ripping-up carpet in 2 or more rooms, this cutter may be a worthwhile purchase to save your back and floors (if you have finished wood flooring under the carpet). I dulled a utility knife quickly in cutting carpet in my living room - the carpet backing is tough and abrasive. I also left a few slice marks in my oak flooring using the utility knife. Makita's cutter is MUCH easier to use, but you'll need to clean the carpet fuzz often with needle nose pliers - the fuzz accumulates in the cutter blade area. It has more power than I expected from a small 12 Volt battery.

Under powered
This would probably be ok for cutting cloth such like materials, and the lighter cardboard but, not the heavier cardboard. And for sure not the poly sign materials that I intended to use it for!It is under powered for one and if it would have other types of blades available, along with a better & different guide/base design. And a more powerful motor, it bogs down very quickly! Then it might be worth having. Makita needs to take note and redesign this tool!

(Revision). Quality Construction, Inadequate Power, Jams Easily, and is Basically Useless to me...
This paragraph is a revised review of this because it’s just the right thing to do. At the time I wrote the below review, I had already returned the 1st one and had it replaced - and the replacement was equally “useless.” The comments below were really true. Now, after watching a friend use the tool and it performed exceptionally well. I tried it and it was like using an entirely new tool from the older ones I returned. These have the same model number, color, and appearance and I cannot visually see any difference but clearly some tweaks have been made in design that now makes it a darned good little tool. I now own 2 of them - 1 for me and 1 for my wife. Highly recommended. While the product starts when the non-ergonomic safety release is pushed, I have found few uses for this device. Only a few things I can see myself ever using this item for - and all of them can be done better with tools I already own. Appears typical Makita high quality construcion, this item lacks power and performance. Even jams cuts on 1/4” corrogated cardboard, won’t even cut those super thin plastic packages that often are delivered with prescription medicines and such. I just now attempted to open a new DeWalt worklight that was packaged in sealed anti-theft plastic and this item had a very difficult time and I ended up with a box knife and scissors to finish the job. This is the only Makita product I’ve purchased (and I have dozens) that seems to be basically useless to me. They could find a market for a cordless cutting tool with some power and manuverability - this surely is not it.

Perfect for cutting boxes
I got this to cut my wife’s Amazon boxes. Works perfect and I got it while it was on sale .

Handy but expensive tool
Used this tool for breaking down cardboard boxes and cat litter packaged in cardboard. Those cat litter boxes have thick sturdy cardboard. Looks like Skil has this exact same tool but for less money. I think other brands have this exact multi cutter as well. Since the tool is teal brand you have to pay extra. Dislike the safety button. I’m generally not a fan of any power tool that has safety buttons. I think the awkwardness of having to contort your hand to press a safety button, then a trigger switch makes tools more dangerous. Does this teeny multi cutter really need a safety switch?
