Great small relay, needs a bridge for all features
The Sonoff ZBMINIR2 is a fantastic hidden relay designed to convert your existing “dumb” light switches into smart ones. It’s compact enough to tuck behind a light switch, making it a seamless solution for upgrading without changing your fixtures. However, like many smart devices, it does have a caveat—you’ll need Sonoff’s own hub or bridge to unlock its full feature set. While that’s a slight drawback, the overall functionality makes it worth considering. I used two of these relays to tackle a tricky two-way switch circuit. I have a light in the loft controlled by switches at the bottom of the stairs and in the hallway, but there was no switch at the top of the stairs. Here’s how I solved it: 1. I installed one ZBMINIR2 on the “pole” side of the two-way switch circuit downstairs. 2. I wired another upstairs where there was an unused light switch (previously wired for outlets that had since been converted). Using the upstairs switch, I configured a “scene” to command the relay downstairs. This setup now controls the loft light without the need to run additional wiring upstairs. Even better, the upstairs switch doesn’t need to be directly connected to a load—it works perfectly with the relay via the scene setup. Initially, I tried to achieve this with the Sonoff ZBMINIL2, but since it requires a load wire to function, I would’ve needed to add a resistor between the neutral and load terminals. This workaround wasn’t ideal, as it would waste power and generate heat whenever the switch was on. Switching to the ZBMINIR2 resolved the issue entirely and allowed for a cleaner, more energy-efficient solution. In summary, the ZBMINIR2 is a reliable and versatile relay for upgrading your switches to smart functionality without major rewiring. Just keep in mind the need for Sonoff’s hub for full compatibility. It’s a great little device for creative problem-solving in home automation.

Convenient size and it just works
works great - paired easily with Smartthings and works as expected. The small form factor made it easy to install in an otherwise crowded two-gang switch box.

Great upgrade from ZBMINI, Works with Hue!
The ZBMINI was my go to to turn dumb lights smart while staying within the Hue ecosystem for lighting. The only problem was that it doesn't respond to changing scenes, so if your light was on and a scene set it to off, it would not turn off. Bummer, but it could be worked around strategically with zones (rooms and zones don't have that problem)... if less convenient. The ZBMINIR2, I'm happy to report, has no such issues! It works with scenes because it's able to report its status to the Hue bridge just like any other hue-compatible accessory. I waited a while to purchase the ZBMINIR2 because initial reports stated that it wouldn't pair with the Hue bridge, but as of November 2025 (and probably earlier) it seems they're shipping with the updated firmware to make it compatible. That means you don't need to buy a SONOFF bridge or use the eWeLink app to update the firmware of the device- you can just wire it up and pair it in the Hue app. I also recently got the Hue Pro Bridge and it paired immediately without issue on that one as well. It works great with "3-way" switch configurations where the switches can control the light in addition to being controlled by Hue or your smart home platform. The wiring diagram seems to be non-standard, but it's very simple: My configuration is probably the most common which is: Light <- NM (2Wire+ground) -> Box[ Switch 1, Neutral, Line/Hot ] <- NM (3Wire+ground) -> Switch 2 In this scenario, leave Switch 1 and 2 alone but add two short lengths of wire to each of the non "Common" (usually red wire with black screw) and connect those to S1 and S2. That's it. Then connect the Neutral, Line (L-in), and Load (L-out) wires as normal. The only con I would say is the depth of the connections in the device- they require an exposed wire length less than 1/4" which is honestly a little too short in my opinion. You really have to tighten down the connections HARD to make sure the wires don't pop out when you push everything back into your switch box. Other than that, this is a great upgrade and worthy successor to the ZBMINI that solves all of its issues. The only way this could get better is if it supported dimming, but that's probably a can of worms SONOFF doesn't want to open.

So far so good except for "detached relay" mode
Update 4 February 2025: I've learned more about the detached relay issue. Bottom line is detached relay is still non functional however it's not clear if this is a device firmware issue or a bug in the Home Assistant ZHA integration. More on this can be found in a search for "zha-device-handlers bug 3579". Just wanted to be clear though this is still an issue (for at least Home Assistant ZHA integration) it may not be Sonoff's fault. Original review: I have quite a few of these and adding more. Mostly using them to turn my "dumb" lights and switches into smart ones. For that use case I do not need the "detached relay" mode and they are working fine (more on that below). If you watch for deals you can get these pretty cheap and for that price I think they're great. Note these Sonoff devices are very good for a 2-way switch (single switch). If you have 3-way, 4-way etc. then unless you have a very specific wiring setup (with supply and load in the same switch box) you will need a different product. There is a good one I've found. Search for "Enbrighten Zigbee Smart Switch" These Sonoff ZBMINIR2 devices are super tiny. I'm able to stuff them into multi-gang switch boxes with a bunch of switches making them all "smart". I've had no range issues. These are also Zigbee routers so they mesh nicely. As long as you have a neutral wire in your switch boxes (usually the case here in the USA) the more you have the better your mesh network is. I am also using them for just the switch contacts and ignoring the output. For example I have one on the dry contact relay terminals of my driveway sensor that lets me tie that into my home automation. This is working great and lets me do all kinds of cool things when someone drives up our driveway. Reason for -1 star: I have read and also experienced myself that the "detached relay" mode isn't working when I tested it. I don't care about that feature for my needs for the moment so I'm only deducting 1 star. I think these are still a great value. However if you do need that capability take note that this is an issue. There are bug reports about it online you can find if you just search for the product name and "detached relay". Hopefully Sonoff will fix this in a firmware update soon. This will be a big issue for you if you're trying to use this with "smart bulbs" and keep your existing "dumb" switches. The detached relay mode is specifically for this use case and it's not working. If it were not for that I'd give it 5 stars.

More compact than it's competitors
compact size (35x35x15mm) that slips behind switches, ideal for retrofitting. Its tiny size doesn’t sacrifice power, supporting up to 10A loads for lights or fans. SmartThings Integration: As a Zigbee 3.0 device, it pairs directly with SmartThings hubs—no firmware hacks. Open the SmartThings app, scan for devices, and it’s detected instantly. Reliable for automations (schedules, voice commands via Alexa/Google). Installation: Effortless for DIYers. Wire live/load/neutral into clearly labeled terminals (neutral required). Fits standard boxes, even in tight spaces. No need for a bulky hub—connects via Zigbee to SmartThings. Pros: Tiny, invisible install. Direct SmartThings pairing. Affordable Zigbee option. Responsive app controls. beware that requires neutral wire

Nice little switch
Did what I needed it to do, hooked up with my Hue bridge. Additionally, if it loses power, it will find the bridge automatically once power is restored. I had mine mounted outside my light fixture, but feel free to mount yours inside switches or fixtures. Beware, the instructions are in a small font size, good luck ready the document.

Helped make 3-way circuit smart
I'm not an electrician, don't work with wires at home if you are not confident :) I had a 3-way switch circuit that wasn't working with the Aqara switch I bought, so I thought I'd try this relay. This one is much more responsive compared to the Aqara switch. On the outside of the switches, it looks and acts like nothing has changed, except now I can use my phone and Amazon echo to control the light as well Used this with Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, and Emulated Hue to get the most out of it

Works with Philips Hue
I wanted to be able to add the integrated LED of a new DC fan to the Hue setup in my house, so that it would turn on and off with the many Hue fixtures in the same room. I went into the canopy of my Fanimation Spirfire fan, and put this inline between the fan’s controller and the lines marked for the LED. Hue was able to find and add this device as an “On/Off Light” when I put it into pairing mode - so now it will come on and off with the other lights. It won’t dim or change temperature, but it’s better than nothing! A note - I did buy a cheap Sonoff Zigbee bridge for $20 somewhere and paired it with this first, to update the firmware, but I’m not sure if that’s actually necessary.

Helemaal top, enorm bereik, alles instelbaar

Compact Zigbee switch with seamless pairing and reliable synchronisation with manual control.
💡 I set this up specifically to work with Home Assistant, and what drew me to it was its ability to synchronise with the existing light switch position. I chose to wire it into the light fitting since it had a neutral, making the installation straightforward. With just three short pieces of wire, I connected live in, live out, and neutral to the lighting connection block, while the switch terminals went to S1 and S2. The manual included with the switch is quite minimal, relying on the manufacturer's website for additional guidance. My main concern was enabling the switch to follow mode, as the instructions didn't make this clear, but I found some extra details online. 💡 Pairing the switch was effortless and completed in seconds. Home Assistant detected it immediately, and once added, the switch mode appeared as an adjustable property, allowing me to configure it as needed. This saved me the trouble of manually forcing the mode during setup. I’ve installed similar smart switches before, so the whole process—wiring, pairing, and integration—took no more than 20 minutes. 💡 In use, the switch responds reliably, with no noticeable delay when toggling the light through Home Assistant. The synchronisation with the physical switch works as expected, maintaining the correct state even if operated manually. This is something to be aware of for following mode. If you operate the switch remotely, then the manual switch will be out of sync. You then need to switch the manual switch to ‘on’ before switching in off manually. This operates as expected. Given its compact size, it fits neatly within the existing junction box without forcing the wiring into awkward positions. The only downside is the lack of detail in the included instructions, but for anyone familiar with smart home installations, it’s a minor inconvenience. ✔️
