Q: Does this charger come with cables to hook the charger to the batteries?

Per the manual, for the 1230UL, the suggested size of the cables depends on the length, as follows:0 to 6 feet --AWG#86-10 feet -- AWG#610-20 feet AWG#4Six feet works for me, so I I ordered these: B003AOC0KG (copy and paste in the Amazon Search Bar to see them).Then I asked an electrician to cut the eyelets of one end of each and install the PINS that came with the charger onto the bare wires.

Q: Must i disconnect my solar charge controller when charing from the grid with my sec1230ul?

Q: Is output current selectable? In other words, regardless of what the charger is doing can I say, select 6amps or some other number to charge batteries at a slower rate?

No. It uses a charging profile for the type of battery and mode selected (DIP switches). By mode I mean you can set it to be a power supply, battery charger, or combo power supply / battery charger. When in the last mode, it doesn't go into the boost phase (highest voltage) at all because it can't tell what current is going into the battery vs going into the load. If you have a constant load, you'll end up toasting your battery because it will sit at a high voltage for too long. I believe if you find the manual for one of these, it will describe the various charging profiles in more detail. I think it starts off with constant current for lead acid and then switches to constant voltage. But I don't think you can control the exact values.

Q: Would this be suitable for use on a fishing boat? Would an occasional sprinkle/splash of water or rain drops damage the unit?

The Samlex units are rock solid, and weather/water resistant. I have one installed on a 28' Boston Whaler Center Console and I have had no problems.
