Review: Five Stars - love it Review: A Seventies selection - This compilation, part of MCA's 'The Millennium Collection' series focuses entirely on Cher's recordings from the Seventies, which was a decade where she recorded some especially credible material which has aged so very well. With just 11 tracks, it doesn't offer the best overview, or best value for money, but the biggest hits from the decade are here, and the remastering is very well done. The opening track, 'Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves' was her first hit of the Seventies, peaking at no.4 in the UK and topping the charts in America in 1971, and is still one of Cher's best-loved songs, which is unsurprisingly because it just sounds so timeless. The next year she scored again the pleasant torch-ballad 'The Way of Love', which didn't do much in Britain, but was a different story in America, where it settled comfortably in the top ten. 'Take Me Home' was a disco anthem over there in 1979, and time has certainly been kind to it compared to lot of other contemporary tracks. 'Dark Lady' is like a mini opera, and one of my favourites with it's interesting story and twist. Although it only briefly dented the British top 40 in 1974, it went all the way in America, and 'Half Breed', which is sung with such conviction that you would be forgiven for believing that it really was about Cher's childhood, had been another chart-topper over there a year previously. The fast-paced 'Train of Thought' was a minor hit after 'Dark Lady', and another jewel which also has a surprise ending that is told so convincingly.''Living in a House Divided' is a good song, as is 'Don't Hide Your Love', both of which appeared on her 1972 album 'Foxy Lady'. 'I Saw A Man And He Danced With His Wife' is a track from the 'Dark Lady' album, and the carnival set pop pearl 'Carousel Man' was one of the delights on 'Half Breed'. The compilation ends with the comforting 'All I Ever Need Is You', which became Sonny and Cher's last major hit in Britain in 1971, peaking at no.8, and doing one better stateside. With 11 great songs well worth owning, this is still a top compilation of Cher's music despite the fact that there are far more generous collections available (see Way of Love: the Cher Collecti or the one disc The Best Of ). For me, the Seventies saw this versatile and enduring star making much better solo work than she had in the Sixties, and as I've already stated, the material still holds up very well today.

This CD contains the longer version of "Take Me Home," which is hard to find (the Chinese version of this song was a huge hit in Taiwan in the early 80's). The shorter single version appears in most of her Best Hits collections. I am very glad to have ordered this CD!
