Essentials of Dyslexia Assessment and Intervention

Tell me everything I should know to be informed...
I have to commend Mather and Wendling on taking the magnitude of information that is known about dyslexia and formatting it into an accessible and practical guide. Let me clearly state for the previous reviewer who believes that a learning disability impacting the core skills involved in reading is somehow not dyslexia, that their definition of dyslexia is not the one widely accepted by the field of professionals who research in reading disabilities. Dyslexia is a very broad term defining a neurobiological disorder[a learning disability] that impairs a person's ability to read and can manifest itself as a difficulty with phonological awareness, phonological decoding, orthographic coding, auditory short-term memory, rapid naming, etc. As stated by Mather and Wendling, dyslexia is a learning disability that impacts the ability to decode (read) and encode (spell).I am a 20 year teacher of students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, the mother of an adult son with dyslexia, and a Ph.D. who teaches and researched in dyslexia and other reading disorders. IMHO, the authors hit a homerun with this book - it does exactly what it says - provides practical information in an easy to read format that will benefit laypersons, teachers, and related service providers. It is on my shelf, will be in my classrooms, and on every recommended bibliography in my undergraduate and graduate literacy and assessment classes I teach.

Great Resource
Wow this book had more than I expected. I am a professional and found this book not only informative but also filled with great resources and tips. This is a quality made book that sites all the information provided. It is based on research and not just someones opinion. These resources listed in the book each have a lot of information provided about each one. Very beneficial when trying to find materials to use with students.

A great resource, especially for reading and special ed teachers
A great resource, especially for reading and special ed teachers. It is a bit outdated in some of the information (how the brain reads and IDEA laws). Overall, worthwhile.

Must Have for Dyslexia Info!
Ordered this book for grad class on dyslexia. It has become a great resource! My teaching colleagues have borrowed to read up on this topic. Mine has so many post-it notes hanging out bc I refer back to it often. Easy to read and applicable for the "real" classroom.

comprehensive guide to decoding skills and reading fluency
"Dyslexia Assessment and Intervention" is a well-researched book that explains the several major skills associated with decoding and reading fluency, describes each skill, gives suggestions for instruction including applicable commercial material, explains standardized procedures for assessment of the skill and suggested commercial assessment instruments. This book is valuable for teachers of reading at all levels - from beginning to experienced.

NOT for examiners
this is a horrible book if you are a school psychologist accustomed to the quality of other "essentials" books. This book is outdated and lacks a scary amount of information. It does not have updated research, some of the quotes and citations are from the 1970's. It does not have an inclusive list of assessments that test the different cognitive or academic areas underlying dyslexia which is just PUZZLING given the actual TITLE of the book. It's pretty useless unless you are a parent or a teacher wanting to learn more about reading. Very poor if you are someone qualified and wanting more information about the assessment process. Ugh.

Dyslexia
Very helpful resource book for people involved in working with children who have a diagnosis for dyslexia. It is a resource that would be of benefit to parents of these children as well.

Great Book
Only just started reading it and it will take a while. Using for a masters in SpLD-Dyslexia and even though its not on my reading list, it has great references and practical information that is easily accessible. Good quick reference guides throughout the book.
