Cast iron is typically very heavy. is this very heavy to pick up? also, do foods really taste grilled, like bbq grilled?

Its not heavy at all. Its a Ceramic-coating not cast iron. Yes alot of food taste like bbq. More like fried in a frying pan. I've done hotdogs that tasted like bbq. So far I have used it for hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken, perogies, chicken strips, breakfast sandwich, bacon. Only thing so far that didn't work great was warming up pizza. You need to warm a bit on a plate first then in the microhearth to crisp the bottom. Just microhearth and the bottom of my pizza burnt and top was cold.

can you make french fries in the grill ?

You can make what is more like oven fries. There is a recipe that comes with the grill. As you know, true French-fries are cooked oil.

How do you cook a thick Sirloin or New York Strip steak in this thing?

Unfortunately it takes some trial and error as all microwaves are different. The thicker the steak the lower the power setting you want to use. I use 50% power on my 1000watt microwave for a 1" steak. 4 min. on one side 1min on the other for med. Your results may very depending on the temp of your steak when you start. If you have an "inverter" microwave you will have more consistent results.

Can you use it to cook with the top off too?

I have never cooked with the top off of this one. I had one simular for years and it didn't have a top and worked well. You may want to cover itwith a paper towel so it won't splatter in your microwave.
