Vostok company story starts back in 1942, when one of the Moscow watch-making plants has been evacuated from Moscow to a little town Chistopol located on the Kama River. Defense equipment was the only company output during war years, but as soon as the war was over Vostok started to make mechanical wrist watches - the main production item ever since. In 1965 Vostok company was appointed an official supplier of watches for the Defense Department of the Soviet Union. This year marks the creation of the world-famous "Komandirskie" ("Commander") watch. Military watch grew very popular even with people who were unaware which end of the gun bullet comes off, mainly due to high precision, excessive reliability and durability. The appearance of the watch also contributes to its appeal - functional and clear-cut design invoked the feeling of belonging to the tough world of combat professional. The experience which Vostok gained through development of the army watch was the foundation of our next special watch - "Amphibian". This impressive timepiece in stainless-steel case endured the depth of 2000 meters - kind of a wrist submarine. Success of the professional watches determined the company's present philosophy - to create mechanical watches maintaining precise timekeeping at any temperature, in any environment, surviving heavy pressure and blows. The viability of the chosen strategy is now time-proven. A vast multitude of people both in Russia and abroad boasting "Vostok" watches and various international prizes awarded for high quality and commercial success testify to this. In 1996 Vostok started a partnership with US "Capital Trading" company aiming to create a new generation timepiece. The watch assembled to US sales by Sputnik TM technology.

It’s cool, buy it!
I’ve had this for a couple of weeks now and I love it. But, love it for what it is - a quirky and imperfect, but very cool watch. I enjoy the 24 hour dial. You have to mentally interact with the watch which I find to be fun. The history of the brand is also cool. I have the black dial version which looks great on a red, black and grey “James Bond” style strap I bought. One tip - It arrived in bag that was taped up around the Vostok red box. I dug into the bag a bit and found what looks to be a customs form in Russian and signed by someone. Very cool.As I said, this is not a perfect watch. The bezel just spins so it is kind of useless, other than for looks. The 30 on the bezel is also slightly off center on the date window when the triangle is at the 24 hour position. The acrylic crystal is gonna scratch and poly watch will be in my future, but so far so good. It seems to be running at about minus 12 seconds per day, which is on the poor end from what I’ve read from others. I was a bit unlucky there. That said, I don’t wear this every day or keep it on a winder, so I’m setting and winding it when I wear it anyway. The bracelet was not bad for the price point, but there are no micro adjustments and it was either a bit too tight or a bit too lose on me. Again, unlucky. But, as I mentioned, I took it off the bracelet and put it on a NATO strap anyway. The lugs are 20 mm so there are tons of options for straps. At the of the day, it’s a cool watch with a cool story. It has a in-house movement and you’ll get it delivered to you for about $100 to $120 with shipping. What’s not to love? Stop reading and hit the “buy now” button already.

Excellent first impression
This watch is made of what appears to be a good grade of stainless steel and has a nice "heft". The face and movable bezel are well proportioned, attractive, and easy to read. It looks good on wrists that are not overly large, unlike some diving and sports watches. Initial quality appears to be quite good. The band is appropriate for a watch in this category. When properly adjusted the gaps between the links are not obvious and there is little play between the links. When adjusting the band, I would suggest using a commercially available pin remover. The date numbers are larger and easier to read than other watches I have seen, probably because they are in the 6 o'clock position.I haven't had it long enough to see how well it keeps time over a long period. An initial estimate would be that it has gained about a minute over a 3-4 day period-not bad at all in this price range for an automatic. All in all so far, it has every indication of being a lot of watch for the money.UPDATE January 2019:Vostok, through its representatives, stands behind this watch.Well after the 30 day return period had expired, the self winding mechanism stopped functioning. I contacted a gentleman named Sergey (who had previously sent a follow-up email confirming delivery of the watch) and he provided me with comprehensive instructions as to how to return the watch for repair. In the event that you encounter an issue, contact him or a designated representative of Vostok through Amazon. I experienced several very prompt (usually less than 12 hours between emails) and courteous replies regarding assistance from Sergey in arranging for the repair.SAVE ANY ORIGINAL PACKING MATERIALS AND DOCUMENTS FROM THE ORIGINAL ORDER! You will have to use them to ship the watch back to the repair facility if necessary. Follow the instructions that you will receive from the Vostok representative. This particular repair took about 4 weeks. A considerable potion of that time was probably mailing transit time both ways. My watch was returned after the repair and is currently working well. The postage from the US to Moscow was about $40 in my case. My repaired watch was returned, postage prepaid, from Moscow. All in all, very commendable after-the-sale service!

For the Price you can't argue, This Watch is Cool!
This particular Komandirskie is a very interesting watch for the price. It is one of the few 24 hour watch faces available at this price point and it is really worth it.The default bracelet that comes with it has a reputation as being subpar which is common for Vostok watches, however I found that when properly sized it is really not all that bad. A NATO or Zulu strap would be a good accessory to purchase with it however. One issue with it would be that a small eyeglass screw driver is required to get into the very small space for the spring bars. The bezel does not click, but I've found it stays in place just fine so long as you don't knock it around while timing. Good for most tasks, but not for real diving. The lume on the indices does work but it is generally not that bright or long lasting, but it is there. That said, this watch makes up for these issues in cool factor. That black 24 hour bezel with marks for every minute still is fantastic, and this watch generates a lot of conversation with its uniqueness. The red second hand is a great touch along with the Cyrillic markings. It looks more expensive that in it, and is an exotic watch to boot.It does keep time relatively well, but I've found it is about a minute fast most of the time, not a major issue if you know you're not buying a certified chronometer. The screw-down crown and clutch makes for a rugged watch as well that I am sure even without being perfectly time will survive for a long time. The crystal is big and it can be scratched, but if you keep a little polish around it is hardly a major problem. Any small nicks have buffed out without a trace. This Vostok displays all 24 hours with minute marks and a cool second hand, while it is imperfect, it is definitely a great purchase for the price. Where else are you going to find a 24 hour watch dial?
