The wonder of planet earth? a cute little picture book that enthralls
A picture tells a thousand words. How apt for this super picturebook that shows us what happens when an alien who is used to visiting many planets in the solar system for research purposes stumbles across our very own Planet Earth. Books are always excellent for showing a different perspective from our own – enabling us to live inside someone else’s skin – and this picturebook plays on that by showing us how wonderful Earth is from this alien’s point of view. So wonderful in fact, that using pictures, the author explains why this naughty alien decides to stay!Using a mixture of vignettes and full pages to explore the situation, the alien is fairly minimalist in features, but has two large eyes that sum up most of his experiences. His size also lends him a different perspective – he’s pretty small, and so butterflies, flowers and especially dogs pose something of a mystery and danger to him at first. Water too is both surprising, and useful! With very distinctive artworks and some challenging vocabulary, this is a nice fit for the audience, complementing nicely Life on Mars by Jon Agee. Recommended. With thanks to Walker for the ARC
