I am going to sound like I am working for the company when I tell you about these Agave-fiber-based drinking straws, but I assure you, I have no connection to this product or this industry other than being a person concerned with the giant amount of plastic waste. When I took one of these straws out of the package and used it, I was in disbelief that this wasn’t just a typical plastic drinking straw, except for its dark brown color. I purposely soaked one of these in a container of water for 24 hours, and it appears completely unaffected. I have tried other agave straws before that have the more typical speckled, slightly rough surface, and although they performed reasonably well, they are far from the look and feel of regular plastic straws. These, on the other hand, look, feel, and work just like their plastic counterparts, because they are still partly petro-plastic. Made with around 30% agave resin, they don’t decades to decompose. This revolutionary new kind of plastic partly made from sustainable, bio-degradable agave cellulose fiber uses a by-product of tequila production that would otherwise go to the landfill. I was in such disbelief that I did some research on the product and the process of making items that have the look and feel of traditional petroleum plastics but are partly made from the waste agave leaves and fibers left over from tequila production. I love the idea of biodegradable straws. I use straws frequently for cans of pop or drinks for the kids and over the last few years have cut back on straw use because of societal guild around micro plastics. I love that these will degrade quickly and are made from used agave plants - what a great repurposing concept. The straws are durable and sturdy and will work in a variety of situations. May be too short for a 20 oz pop but plenty long for cans and cups. A little bit wider than I hoped, but that's not a big deal at all. These do not have flex necks, but again, that is perfectly fine, it wasn't advertised and it's not something we were expecting, just more of an fyi for you Mr. or Mrs. or Ms. Consumer There is a very slight odor and taste, but it dissipates quickly after pulling the straw out of the bag. It is a bulk bag of 2000 straws all loose, so be prepared to separate them into smaller bags for storage at home. If you are using these in a restaurant setting, which I think would be a great idea and is the actual intended use - then obviously I would leave them in a the bag/box and just pull from there to refill the straws at your drink station. These agave straws are indistinguishable from plastic. They don't melt like paper straws. I've got over 6 hours continuous use from one. It makes it easy to care for the environment and have REAL straws. The opening is wide, like a McDonald's straw, but not bubble tea big. This is their jumbo size, there is a regular size too. The ends aren't sharp -some straws can cut or abrade your lips from that. These are perfect. They have no discernable flavor at all - alot of times one hears 'Agave' and thinks sweetener or tequila, but no, these are totally neutral tasting. What I DON'T love - I wish they were 2 inches longer. They work on a standard pint glass, but if there's a fancy cocktail garnish, your face is too close. They also will just make it for a bubble dome, but not if the cup is tall. Also, in an enviromentally sound way, they are not individually wrapped, which is a problem in a commercial setting if you don't have a straw dispenser. These could be my dream straw, if they were 10", had an agave wrapper too, and maybe came in other colors. As it is, they are REALLY GOOD, a major step up from paper straws, and I like them.
