Beautiful instrument
I have always wanted to have a real compass for hiking and traveling. This is one beautiful instrument.I don't quite know how to use all the features but there are plenty of online videos. I actually live in a very rural area so this would be quite handy. Seems very well-made and waterproof also.

This is a good compass for a good price
Okay - disclaimer right up front: I'm no amazing outdoorsman or die-hard backpacker. I was an Eagle Scout once upon a time, though, so I have had limited and mostly theoretical experience using a map and compass. Enough to realize that two things are pretty essential, (1) you need a reasonably-good compass, (b) you really need to know what you're doing. This item fills the bill for item (1) well enough for most of us, and it doesn't take a lot of time to satisfy requirement (b). (at some point, you're going to catch that). This compass has lots of nice features. It's extremely sturdy - maybe even a bit too much so. I'm not sure I would take something this beefy if I were trying to set a speed record on the Appalachian Trail, for example. But for the rest of us, it's great - some kind of cast aluminum would be my guess. It's got features galore - a bubble level (because a compass works so much better when it is level), a glow in the dark ring around the dial, and a glow in the dark arrow pointing north. On the back, there is a thermometer (super small for my old eyes, but good enough that even I can make out the temperature to within about 3-4 degrees - I'm sure you could do much better), and a gravity-operated inclinometer (for estimating height).Rulers disposed on either side of the case are provided for measuring your map scale and then estimating distances on the map and, I guess, for drawing an intended course (I can't walk in a straight line, though). The cover has a clear plastic/glass window with a built-in site, for fixing the location of landmarks in the distance - very handy for actual cross-terrain navigation. There is a magnified peep-site on the trailing end of the compass (the end that faces you while you use the compass), through which you can see a nice, easy-to-read scale for the direction you are facing. That's the same as reading the dial on the top of the compass, but as it is magnified, you might be able to take a more precise reading using the magnified scale. I like it.The compass comes with a lanyard of acceptable length, suitable for tying it to something or hanging it around your neck. There is a quick-disconnect so that the compass can be untethered from the lanyard, if so desired. I might have put the lanyard attachment point on the end of the compass that faces you while you are using it, but it is actually located on a corner at the far end. It's a nice unit. If you need a compass - make sure you look at this one.

Seems to work good
Decent compass to learn how to shoot a bearing.Easy to use, don’t think the inclination meter is the best. The unit has some weight to it and seems decently built.

Thorough Compass
This compass is a really durable and thorough compass. It doesn't just point North like you regular cheap compasses. With this compass, you'll be able to read elevation, slope, directions, where you are precisely on the map, etc. It is definitely your military style compass.I'll be honest, it does way more than I was expecting. I don't even know how to use some of its features. It does come with a little instruction paper, but if you're not familiar with this style of compass, you will need to practice a lot and look up videos, and such to learn. I think it's a great skill to have and this compass is a great tool for it.
