This is a great resource for mandarin, it helped me a lot.

This book, and the companion text book which I purchased from another vendor, is the most usable Chinese text I've found. Ive tried studying Chinese three times in the past, only to give up in frustration. These books combine written and spoken Chinese effectively, where some courses only treat one. But for a novice, this initial lessons focus on familiar Chinese words. What, you don't know any Chinese words? Think of names of people and places. Realising that Shanghai means on the water, and Sichuan is four rivers, was an epiphany. And when I recognized, in Chinese characters, the word Beijing on a license plate in a photo, I actually strutted around the room. No book can change the fact that Chinese is structurally very difficult for a middle aged American, but this book gives the sense of fulfillment from learning and discovery from the first chapters.

In attempting to learn written Chinese characters, Basic Mandarin Chinese reading and writing Practice Book has been a great companion to the text book of the same name. As a starter series I highly recommend the two books for beginners.

My son is studying Mandarin Chinese in college and uses this book often.He's thrilled with the extra help it gives him!

If there’s a better mandarin workbook I would like to know what it is.

Day 1: no audio, which I bought this textbook for. Can't print the flashcards so I can practice the strokes. Can read the text, but some of the Kindle texts available for members does the same for free.Day 2: after digging through the text, found link to publisher's site for the flash card PDFs, so raising my stars from 1 to 3. Still looking for audio though!

I don’t have the textbook this coincides with.

Haven't practiced much but I am sure it would help my Mandarin learning.
