Good read

Slow start but really enjoyed the second half of the story! Completely different to Water for Elephants. Still not convinced on the Loch Ness Monster 😊

Absolutely loved it. Loved the Scottish angle

Absolutely loved it. Loved the Scottish angle, and loved the way this ghastly American became quite human. Thought the ending was a wee bit of a 'lazy' ending, though.

wonderful novel: original

Water for Elephants was, is, an extraordinary, wonderful novel: original, characters we care about, history lightly done. You can see why it was a success and picked up by a publisher. But this book...It could be three stars but Matron gives it two because with all the editorial clout behind this writer - we get this? Second rate. Second class. Oh dear. Story: three rich kids (behavioral problems thrown at you from the start) go on quest to find the Loch Ness monster to win back family honour and save a marriage. Yes, really. They go to WW2 Scotland and meet a crazy, Gaelic lot of characters, and one is obviously going to be the love interest. They're a crazy, wild bunch being plucky in war and our heroine finds redemption. Is the husband gay? I was never quite clear. Signposted, BIG signs, and then sort of drifted off. Put aside the historical oddities (crossing the Atlantic as civilians? I don't think so) and the inaccuracies (many won't notice so let it go, Matron) - I turned page after page waiting for something to happen. This is a book that could have been written by a creative writing class computer: no surprises, formula, wacky Scots. This is a fine writer. Sadly, Matron won't buy her again.

False Claims

This story confirmed the belief that the truth will always prevail over lies and false claims. It is an endearing tale that proves courage and honesty is always best. A good storyline and well written.

Unexpected and enjoyable

Such an unusual story is always refreshing, especially when so well written. While there were some 'improbabilities', I didn't care because I enjoyed the story so much. After a slow start, I became interested and couldn't put the book down. Each member of the trio of upper class socialites displays a different view into how that life affects people when thrown into a stew of life away from the cloistered upbringing. There are roles and expectations that often don't seem obvious to those who don't travel in those circles. It would seem endless amounts of money make for an easy life, but that's not necessarily the case. It can be a stifling burden just like not having enough. People are people regardless of circumstances and their strengths and weaknesses make more difference in how their lives evolve. That certainly is the case with this group who head to Scotland during the war. The two young men hope to escape criticism at home for not serving the war effort, but have no clue that it would be worse where the war is actually taking place--and their privileged attitude serves them poorly. The folly of their trip is enormous but invisible to them. The wife of one of the boys goes along as her role dictates, but is set free of her stifling life by the change in circumstances. It seemed to me the Loch Ness monster they sought was the figurative monster in their lives. Don't know if that was intended by the author, but I liked the symbolism and I enjoyed the bit of Scottish lore thrown in as well.

I enjoyed this story from the first page to the last

I enjoyed this story from the first page to the last. I didn't want it to end, you become so attached to the characters you want to stay on the edge of their lives looking in forever. A book I could absolutely read again just for the visit with "old friends". Love it and highly recommend it.

Una historia que se desarrolla demasiado lenta

no me ha convencido. No he logrado pasar de las 100 páginas que ya me he rendido. Es muy lento, no se plantea el nudo como para enganchar al lector. A mí personalmente no me ha gustado.
