Difficult themes explored in a highly readable and enjoyable book
This is an extremely interesting book. While covering difficult themes and concepts, it is written in a highly engaging manner, and is very readable. The concept of "faith" and its demands for lay people during this period is very well described in Chapter 2, setting up the background required for further analysis in the following chapters:Access to the FaithReligious LifeDevotionThe pilgrimage of life and deathPriests, people and powerInclusion and exclusionThe reality of religionMany difficult themes are explained and drawn out for the reader in highly interesting ways, enhanced by contemporary examples throughout the book. The integral impact of religion on the lay person in Medeival Europe during this period is very well presented, and the end result is a highly readable, highly entertaining, and above all highly interesting book which it was a joy to dive into.Highly recommended to anyone wanting to learn more about medieval religion, particularly its impact on the ordinary person; and for anyone wanting to understand some of the ecclesiastical concepts and contexts within which such medieval religion was `lived'.
