Q: How wide is the top of the hood that goes up to the ceiling

This is just a cover made from stainless steel that may be cut for height of course. It's 10 inches from memory but the outlet itself is circular so, should you not wish to use the cover, round ducting will do and by using a reducing coupling, it should fit whatever application. Just an aside, if you go for this the fixings supplied are not, in my opinion, up to the job. This is heavy, so swap them for more robust hardware. Also, check your wall for absolute square otherwise, if where this is attached the wall "tapers" however level across the horizontal it will appear to be out of plumb along the cieling edge. Easily remedied with shims behind top bracket but cannot be adjusted once extractor is affixed to wall. Excellent product though!
