Concise and incisive
Beautiful colour illustrations and concise mini-essays built around the narrative of a teenager learning from his grandfather, who is a master chef, and his grandfather's French apprentice.Readers unfamiliar with a manga format may be tempted to take this book lightly - don't. This is a serious book absolutely packed full of information, from chemistry through theology to history, economics, and etiquette. The brilliant concision of the mini-essays is mind-boggling.The inclusion of a French perspective, and comparisons with French cuisine, make this a very accessible introduction to Japanese food for a global audience. I had many little eureka moments of: "I understand! That's why that dish/tradition/term is like that". This book is brilliant, and explains so much, not only about Japanese food, but about Japanese culture, history, and economics.Can we have more manga essay books like this one, please?
