Q: How do I insert the ink cartridge. I've tried pushing it on but it won't go. I don't want to break anything

Have you tried turning it the other way up. You just press it in and put the lid on. Do you have the right ink cartridge

Q: Does the nib section on the matte black version have a gloss finish? The photo seems to appear that it does.

No, the entire exterior of this pen is matte black, apart from the gold look trims. Just adding that it's a lovely weight with a medium nib. Hope this helps.
