A good quality basic laser engraver
The Longer Ray5 10W laser engraver was quite easy to put together ~ at least I think so ~ I have put together a CNC kit some years ago that was way more complicated to assemble ~ but really the Ray5 was a piece of cake. Well thought out design and construction. It is a fairly basic machine but I have added several upgrades to it before I get to some serious engraving ~ drag chain to manage the wiring (it's not a big issue with the basic model ~ as the wiring behaves well enough when the machine is in motion ~ but I do recommend drag chains... it's just more tight and elegant wiring management. I ordered the air assist nozzle from Longer3D ~ I had a small airbrush air compressor so I used that for the air assist ~ it works just fine and it really does make a difference towards preventing burn marks on wood. I did several other enhancements ~ like a crosshair laser and so on... YouTube has plenty of great reviews and tips for Longer Ray5 5W and 10W ~ very positive reviews by some pro makers and ever-so-useful tips and how tos.Don't get too excited about the mention of WiFi ~ you won't be able to do streaming control of this machine through WiFi ~ that's kind of annoying ~ I'm fine using the SD card ~ but I like bells and whistles that actually work so I researched for a best way to run the machine via USB ~ either for sending files or for actually and dependably streaming ~ I am still testing the streaming ~ I am using LightBurn on a MacBook and so far ~ for a few simple test burns ~ I can stream quite dependably ~ Still it's probably smarter to do serious work directly from the SD card.I am streaming ... by the way... over 25 feet of ethernet cable ... what am I using for that you ask? check this out... OREI USB Over Cat5e/6 Extender ~ https://a.co/d/goKnlrC ~ this clever little kit gives you ~ in my experience so far ~ a dependable and fast enough transmission over USB (Ethernet) ~ I also have a small USB camera set up on the Ray5 ~ Bells and Whistles!! and am running both signals ~ sending control GRBL with LightBurn and returning a live video feed to my MacBook with no issues. (extra Tip! It seems to me that I got better and consistant signal to the Ray5 via OREI USB Extender when I turned on DTR in the machine settings ~ look it up on how to set that in LightBurn. What about the most important part? The engraving? The Cutting? I find myself ~ so far ~ and I am still just breaking this machine in ~ early testing on a number of materials ~ I have to agree with what some of the best YouTube reviewers are saying about this machine ~ it says 10W ~ and it is 10W ~ but the clever way Longer3D seems to have designed their laser module ~ makes it even more powerful and quite precise for a 10W laser. I have easily engraved (and quite deeply) and cut 1/2" Poplar (my favorite wood so far for engraving) ~ Poplar is not a soft wood ~ I would call it a semi-hard wood actually and the Longer Ray5 10W handles it just fine.

Burn out
Super happy to get this and set it up. Unfortunately, after the second use the power was little to nothing. My first test was on 1/4 MDF. It engraved a message and cut a 4" circle around the message with no issue. Supper happy camper. So, with the test done, I started using it on the project... and despite 150 passes (you can set this using Lightburn Software) it would no longer cut more than 2mm in depth on the same 1/4 mdf. It seems to me that several of the laser diodes (its got five) fried out after first use. I am returning it.

Great product and outstanding customer support
I have this item and I'm more than pleased with it.When I installed limit switches the controller had to be flashed with new firmware. There was a problem on my end,I wiped the controller out so I called the people at Longer for help. Thats when I found out this company and the people in it were willing to go out of there way to help me. I'm talking above and beyond!I was sent a replacement however it was not wired or flashed for the limit switches. When I informed them I needed the controller for switches I was sent another one ready to go,cables and firmware all done at no cost to me. I am so impressed with their equipment and willingness to go out of there way to help I purchased Longer rollers and upgraded to a Ray 5 20 watt.A special thank you to Ryan for all his attention and help.

Quality finish product.
When considering the Longer Ray5 Laser Engraving Machine, it's essential to understand your specific goals and requirements. Whether you need to cut wood or engrave various materials, this machine offers different laser options, each with its strengths and weaknesses. If your primary focus is on wood and softer materials, the diode laser is an excellent choice. Diode lasers are proficient in engraving limited materials and excel particularly at wood engraving. They can also cut stencils effectively. However, if you're looking to engrave metals and plastics as well, the diode laser's capabilities might fall short. In contrast, the fiber laser is the way to go if you require a professional engraver that can work with all types of metal and materials. Fiber lasers are fast and provide superior engraving quality compared to diode lasers. Their only drawback is that they are not as efficient with wood engraving.Personally, I use the Longer Ray5 for stencil cuttings, and I find the assembly process to be straightforward, which is a definite plus. However, I must admit that the quality of the engravings is not on par with what the fiber laser achieves. While it gets the job done, it doesn't deliver the same level of precision and finesse that a fiber laser does.In conclusion, the Longer Ray5 Laser Engraving Machine is a versatile tool that caters to different needs. If you prioritize wood and soft material engraving or stencil cutting, the diode laser option will be more suitable. On the other hand, if you require a high-quality, all-around engraver for metals and various materials, the fiber laser is the better choice. Consider your specific requirements carefully before making a decision.
