Yes some people and their expert chef of 50 years who worked in a japanese kitchen blad blad blad. My brother tried to chop a coconut and there was a lot of chipped and dented all over. When i grind it down and resharpen it, i can see the carbon stainless steel folds into the part i sharpen. It is not a surface etching, it is damascus steel.With all this said, its still a very cheap knife and should only be used to cut vegetables and some fruit, but not a coconut . . . .

Buyer beware! Very disappointed in the quality of these knives. They are beautiful and have nice edge, but one of the handles broke after only two months of use. We only hand wash, store them on a block and use wood cutting boards so they should have lasted! I contacted Amazon but we were outside of the return window by 10 days and refused to help. Buyer beware.
