Hello,Thanks for contacting us. There should be no ground on your vermont castings grill. There is no ground on this ignitor. All 4 terminals are positive for spark thanks.

Battery issue, upside down or a bad battery.........It seems unusual you would get 2 bad igniters in a row.

There are 2 types out there for you to consider. If it is the one that turns and click search amazon for item# B01NA0SZTZ. If it is the push button style that takes a battery then search for item# B00IXWTE04. NOTE that 50001482 is not an ignitor part number. It is a piece of steel on your BBQ facing.
