Ordinary batteries cannot be used. The radio has a battery similar to that used in a mobile phone and is similarly re charged via wire link to PC or similar or mains adaptor. Hope this helps - it is a fine little radio.

Q: how do you control the volume?

The volume control is on the top of the radio - a partially concealed wheel to the right of the on/off switch. Rotate CLOCKWISE to turn the volume DOWN; rotate ANTICLOCKWISE (COUNTERCLOCKWISE if you're American!) to turn the volume UP.
