Review: Excellent dictionary; better than Collins and cheaper too! - I bought this dictionary without really assessing the market because I trusted an Oxford dictionary to be the best. Since then I have used the equivilant Collins-Robert (CR) dictionary in school, and while that in itself is very good, I'm still glad that I bought Oxford-Hachette. The typeface is clear, it has a vast array of sample letters, bills, contracts etc. in the middle section to assist people such as students who are going to live in France, and most importantly it has a HUGE range of vocabulary. Despite being cheaper than CR, it actually appears thicker, and it also comes with an accurate pronunciation CD-ROM. There isn't much to choose between them in terms of vocab, but I'd choose Oxford-Hachette over Collins-Robert simply because of the many helpful extras and it being a bit cheaper. Review: This dictionary has everything! - This dictionary has everything. Initially I found it almost too comprehensive and a it was a bit difficult sometimes to find the word or use of the word that I was actually looking for amongst the mass of information. Now I'm getting used to it, I realise that it has everything in you could possibly need: words, phrases, accurate and up-to-date translations, advice on grammar, a section on verbs, sample letters, CVs and resumes, guides to the internet and email, cultural notes, specific additional information such as colours, numbers, measurements and much, much more. It's hard to think of anything more Oxford could have packed into this amazing dictionary. It's clearly laid out with a helpful colour scheme and clear divided sections. Be warned though, it is big and it is quite heavy!

Excellent Reference Point
The content is from a highly trusted publisher so no difficulty there with five stars. However, this is a huge, bulky and cumbersome tome which can be difficult to handle even for a man with very big hands.

Best French to English dictionary
I bought this for taking the CIOL DipTrans exam. I had a big Collins Robert but it wasn't up to the job. This has more detail, much better for translation work, along with a Larousse, and the "blue book" dictionary of culural references.

Useful reference book
This book weighs a ton but it is so helpful. I’m doing a Duolingo French course and my vocabulary is being helped when I have to write a paragraph in French.

Very complete. Essential.
A 'proper' big dictionary. There are times, even in these days of instant access to information, when only a whopping great book with a couple of thousand pages will do, and you'll be glad you had this on your bookshelf when those times arise. It's everything you could want from a dictionary. The thing about French-English dictionaries is that you've got to get the biggest you can lift. Why? Because translation dictionaries are really only half the size they appear to be – everything is in effect duplicated. Think about it. I bought this because I soon found that a mid-sized dictionary didn't have enough words, and too often not the relatively obscure words I was starting to look up, again because they're really only half the size you think they are. I wouldn't be without this, cumbersome as it is. I'll probably keep it forever.

Excellent
An excellent book. I do sometimes find words that are not included, but for that I really need a French dictionary. Excellent value.

Oxford French Dictionary is very helpful. If anyone want to learn French from the core of the heart & passionate about learning French, must buy this book. Full of expressions & 910000 words & phrases & translations. At first French-English , then English-French.

Das Wörterbuch The Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary ist sehr gut, preißgünstig, hat sehr viele Wörter, die gut strukturiert sind, ist 2-teilig (French - English; English - French), ist umfangreich, hat viele nützliche Informationen (zu Grammatik, Kultur, etc.) und ist in großem Format. Mir gefehlt es sehr und es ist empfehlenswert zu kaufen.

The vocabulary is very full and up to date. The new layout with the headwords in colour is excellent. The fuller section on effective communication is also excellent. So the new edition builds very effectively on the good features of the earlier version. The dictionary is a must for any serious student of the French language.

The definitions are properly concise for easy understanding, and the example phrases and sentences are suitably provided with English translations for the quick grasp of the vocabulary usage. As far as I know, this is the only dictionary which notes the noun gender. It is marked with the definite article le/la placed before the nouns. The visual presence of the definite articles helps to learn the gender difference far better than the conventionally used phrasal indications such as ‘feminine noun’ or ‘masculine noun’. One drawback of this dictionary, however, is that there is no information on how the words are pronounced. In order to supplement that, I would recommend to get either the CD-ROM or the smart phone application version of ‘Oxfoed Hachette French Dictionary’. On the smart phone app, you can hear the prononciation with a simple tap on the speaker icon. The CD-ROM version not only plays the prononciation, but also reads out the example phrases and sentences. The CD-ROM is available for Windows only.
