What kind of wax is to be used on the mechanical piece?

Wax is provided in the kit. But I also just use a cheap tea light candle.

How long does it take to assemble?

I did it with my son and it took us about 1.5 hrs.

Is it fragile once built or is it rugged once all put together?

it's pretty rugged... I mean I wouldn't throw it around the room lol.... I got mine for my birthday and first thought it was a cheap wood puzzle...but I was really impressed on how durable and how well made it was... definitely not cheaply made...
