Nice Beginner Radio
Great kit to get into the hobby or to listen to your local fire departments. I use mine just to hear what’s going on and it works fine for stuff around me. I haven’t really done too much ham but I programmed different channels with chirp and have gotten activity. The included accessories is nice as well as the extra battery and antenna. Programming is easy just watch a tutorial for chirp.

Well thought out kit no better kit anywhere near pricepoint
This is a great unit. But the original is my preference . Dont buy into the distance hypes on any shortwave radio . Very subjective to terrains and building environments . Also often the claims involve connecting to a repeater. This is a great package buy though. Especially being able to chirp your unit from a phone Be sure to thoroughly check packaging some items hide . The tali ran us in circles usingBaefong’s. You might need this to do the same to uncle. Soon ,wish i could lol that last

LOVE the dual transmission PTT option
Haven't yet put a meter on it to test actual power output, but I can hit repeaters that my UV-5RA doesn't reach clearly, so there's gotta a bit more output.I do like that it came with an extra long antenna that also is an enhancement over the little rubber ducky that comes with it.The BIGGEST thing I have truly come to love about it is the dual PTT, you can of course dual monitor on the UV-5, but you can't just select the upper or lower PTT to talk on it! The only thing you gotta watch is where the little arrow is to know which freq is talking! 🤣More than once I've chimed in on the wrong freq!I do enjoy putting bank A on my usual freq and scanning with the other. The menu is pretty much the same, but the buttons are slightly different and have to be looked at... they are a little bigger tho.I really programmed it with the provided cable (win 10 and a win 11 computer) without special drivers for the com port onCHIRP.I also programed it with the wireless Bluetooth adapter and using their "ODMaster software. It's not great- very manual and no imports like CHIRP- but can save multiple configs for locations uploaded from my cell phone on the fly.I love the battery life and the extra battery that came with it!It's hard to find something I didn't like about this inexpensive but excellent radio!BTW, I do use it for both HAM & GMRS- I just set the power output to the FCC regulations and am licensed for both.I regularly participate in Net Calls in the morning on both 70cm & GMRS from stations around the country!

For a starter or work radio
For a starter radio to get into ham it's works great after you get use to itFor work you need to figure out what frequency is being used and be mindful that this is a ham radio [recommend staying on frs and gmrs after unlocking]Pros: cheap and easy to replace if damagedSpeaker is nice and loud on both the device and the lapelle micOne battery on full charge will last all day with out a problem if your just listening and not talking it will last 3 daysHas good range [good enough for a construction site]Cons: is still a fang so the ham bros are going to give you shit for itThe belt clip holds fine but the screws not so much [recommend getting a pouch for it]Comes locked from the shipper and you need a computer to unlock it [no the trick with the uv-5r will not work with this]You need to power it down and hold menu as you powering on to move from frequently mode to channel modeLike I said good starter radio or work radio

My overall favorite radio price/value/capability
I have tried several different radios and this one is my favorite. It’s built sturdy, battery is held very securely and it’s easy to use. Has a better speaker than many others, reception is great, having dual talk buttons is convenient. Battery life is very good 2-3 days and there is always a spare ready to go.They also work well as a scanner, and can be linked and turned into a cheap repeater. If these had a USB charging port they would be even better. USB charging batteries are available, but they cost almost as much as the whole radio and kit.

It will get you on the air
I am too new to the Ham Radio hobby to be an expert on Ham Radios. I did however spend money on a product and it is in that space I will write a review. I timed the delivery of this radio with the passing of my Technician exam. It arrived the morning of(exams are currently virtual)as planned. With the equipment that shipped with this radio I was able to make my first contact the very next day via a local repeater(12 miles away). The programming cable that shipped with this radio helped program all of the repeaters in my area with ease. A MUST have. Having 2 batteries is a plus. The included hand mic feels a little cheap, but it works. Same for the included ear piece.I upgraded to a 'mag mount antenna' for use indoors to reach evening Nets so I can be heard clearer and I purchased an APRS cable to use this radio with an old Android phone for APRS and it worked great!A great radio/accessories for the money to throw in a bag for your hiking/camping trips. As your interest/enjoyment of the hobby grows, your budget will have to as well. Once you decide to go HF, Digital or Mobile(Car rigs) you'll have to spend a bit more. This radio will get you on the air....locally.

Speaker Mic Issues
The speaker mic provided will only transmit on B channel. You have to purchase a separate speaker mic that is a dual pot so you can transmit on the A channel. We have our radios set up to talk on frequency A and then B is only a supervisor channel. So it gets confusing for employees using one radio one day then a different one where they have to flip the channels soothe mic can be used. I wish the proper speaker mic was included in this package so you don't have to buy an additional mic.

Good Radio
I have quite a few HT's, Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu, etc... and now have added the UV-82HP. Lots of goodies in the box including an extra battery. Programming was easy using Chirp, and I was able to get a decent signal report from a distant repeater. So far I have no complaints with this radio, and you can't beat the price! 73, K6SPA
