great book

Loved it, first of Jane Austen's I read and now I plan to read all her others. I loved all the extra information too, it was very helpful with making me understand things about the author herself and how things were in the time period she lived in.

JA presumably scratched her novels out with a quill, ink and parchment, sitting at wooden desks in various country parsonages and the like, hoping the light would be good enough to keep going. I wonder what her friends and relatives thought of her as he pored over the paper, eyes down, lost in the tiny world she so persuasively conjured, a world comprised of upper class gentry where servants barely get a line of dialogue, never mind are recognised as human beings with their own stories. But in that world we all reside - the clever, the idle, the vain, the idiotic, the avaricious, the generous, the noble, and the base. One tiny incident - where Frank Churchill is about to take Emma into his confidence but is interrupted by the arrival of another - shows the majestic grasp JA had on her material as we, along with Emma, think it is going to be one revelation when in fact it was to be quite another, as we learn later. I see grim legions of academics waving their copies of Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Dickens, Kafka, Joyce, Beckett, Bernhard and so on at me in an enraged manner but, listen, Miss Austen stands as tall in their company as anyone and, with Emma, taller. It doesn't, and probably can't, get any better.
