Q: What is the smell people mention? Petroleum, paint, glue, or something much stinkier?

Yes, it does have a weird smell to it. Like newly painted. It only lasted for about a week though. I love the cabinet. It is perfect for what we needed. The only thing that annoys me, is how the cabinet doors don't sit right. They look lopsided. It's not terribly noticeable, but I notice it.

Q: Are the bottom shelves adjustable? Can the divider be left off the bottom shelf?

The shelves are not adjustable and you could easily leave the bottom divider off but it does add stability. Hope this helps. Love the cabinet!

Q: is the top shelf removable? I need 14 inches on the top cabinet which I can get if I remove the top shelf.

Everything is screwed in so it’s not like you can take it off/put it on whenever like some that are on pegs, but it comes in pieces so as you assemble it you can just choose to not put it in and it’s fine. The inside is all painted so if you don’t put that shelf in it won’t look weird.

Q: How much weight will each shelfs support

One of the drawings shows the drawer as 15# and the total weight capacity of 180 #. I just put glasses and dish's in the upper portion and mixing bowls and bakeware and assorted other items in the bottom. I would guesstimate 25-30# per shelf.
