Phenomenal
An incredible, profound and eye-opening read about the inner spiritual journey of the phenomenon known as Imam Abu Hamid al Ghazali. This book touches beautifully - written by the great Imam himself - on the spiritual "crisis" he experienced which lead him to the Path of Tasawwuf (Sufism) and recognition of the heart's realities. In some ways, many youth of today can relate to this; a turning from "knowledge" to true knowledge and understanding of one's purpose, true identity and inward journey as a servant of God.

best among the versions i have encountered
This edition is the most properly commented one among all those that I have read. The text itself by Ghazali is short, elliptic, and contains technical terms that can be either modernised with arguable results or have to be commented on.Ghazali's text is about his life story, though not a straightforward autobiography. It is a tour from science to science, what each science means, what it studies, what it "knows" and what it doesn't. Then after the tour among all sciences he arrives at that which transcends them. Here, the technical terms, the schools of thought and the sects that Ghazali is referring to have been commented on academically. With the intro, commentaries, and addenda, this edition will give you an idea about what the world was like back then, and provide clues to relate the contents with where we live now.

brilliance!!
some great words from imam Ghazali are:"Knowledge without action is insanity and action without knowledge is vanity.""Does money upset the hearts of learned men?he answered "men whose hearts are changed by money are not learned"imam Ghazali is one of the greatest scholars islam has ever seen. A master of theology, himself said that "I did not write a single word on theology until i memorised thousands of pages, of what the best theologans of islam have said about it".the imam found from his own experimentation that Sufism is the best way of life, sufis have the best personalities, and sufism is the easiest way to finding Almighty God.you can also purchase the excellent film made about imam ghazali from [...] i absolutely love this film, it is very modern, and very well funded and made.

What turned up was the same book, apparently, by a different publisher. I would have preferred that I was told this before it was dispatched.
