Winona Ryder (in an Oscar(r) nominated role) and Academy Award(r) winner Susan Sarandon (1995 Best Actress, Dead Man Walking) star in this "affectionate, superbly acted" (Los Angeles Times) family favorite. With her husband off at war, Marmee (Sarandon) is left alone to raise their four daughters, her LITTLE WOMEN. There is the spirited Jo (Ryder); conservative Meg (Trini Alvarado, Paulie); fragile Beth (Claire Danes, William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet); and romantic Amy (played at different agesby Kristen Dunst, Wag the Dog and Samantha Mathis, Broken Arrow). As the years pass, the sisters share some of the most cherished and painful memories of self-discovery, as Marmee and Aunt March (Mary Wickes, The Man Who Came to Dinner) guide them through issues of independence, romance and virtue. Gabriel Byrne (End of Days), Eric Stoltz (TV's "Chicago Hope") and Christian Bale (The Portrait of a Lady) co-star in this "handcrafted valentine" (Newsweek) of a film.

Heart-warming family viewing
Beautiful film version of a timeless children's classic. Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy are sisters with very individual personalities. Along with their parents and Hannah, they are the March family. Then, they meet Laurie, the boy next door , an only child who longs to be part of a large family. The girls welcome Laurie into their circle and much hilarity ensues.Years later, when they have all grown up, the girls find their life partners all except one sister whose fate takes her in a very different direction. This is a very moving film covering the themes of family, love, loss and following dreams. It is perfect family viewing.

Excellent feel-good movie, true to the classic book
I love this movie! I don't know how many times I read Little Women as a child and young teen. It's easily in the dozens. There's a good reason it is considered a classic book; read it if you haven't already. And this film is an excellent adaptation, beautifully styled and well cast. I especially love Winona Ryder as Jo. It was several years since I last watched it, and was in need of some nostalgia. It didn't disappoint; just as good as it was when it was made 20? years ago. And now, as a woman who named one of her baby boys Laurie after this very novel, I love it just as much as ever. This review is for the digital download.

Better than the new version
I've watched both versions of this movie, the new version compared to this older version just doesn't compare. This older version is so much more emotional, has a better storyline and more visually pleasing to watch in my opinion. Loved it the whole way through, Winona Ryder is an amazing actress and I cried my eyes out the entire time

CLASSIC REMAKE DVD
HOME VIEWING ON LARGE SCREEN TV. IT WAS A FAIR EFFORT AND WINONA WAS PERFECT. IN HER ROLE, BUT WE HAD DIFFICULTY WITH SOME OF THE SOUND TRANSFER. We found it often difficult to follow in Alcott's plot and dialogue, which was a great shame as it is a long film and with a varying time frame and locations within. OK but slightly disappointing we felt after the effort taken with the locations and period costuming

Brilliant adaptation.
I first saw this film over 20 years ago in the cinema so when I saw it on Prime I thought I'd take a walk down memory lane. So glad I did. What a beautifully made film. Very faithful to the books which hasn't always been the case with movie versions. A great cast, wonderful production and a lovely score. Also shows Marmee as the free thinking feminist which she is in the book and I loved that. Keep the Kleenex handy! A total triumph which hasn't dated at all. Love, love, love it!

The best version of the all.
I love this movie, I've recently seen the new 2019 version and although I enjoyed it and there were some new angles explored. This version remains my favourite. I think Winona Ryder makes the perfect Jo. I also liked that they had 2 actors playing Amy (a younger and older version). Also Susan Sarandon makes a really good marmie, with more substance. I say if you've watched the new version and haven't already seen this one give it a try, you will enjoy it.

So true to the story, I wished it could have gone on for hours.
Apart from making it longer, I can't think what they could have done to improve on this version of the novel. Perfect casting - who wouldn't believe that Winona Ryder really is Jo March or could think of a better personification of "Marmee" than Susan Sarandon? Beautiful scenery and, where it couldn't have been filmed in authentic places, certainly looked as you'd imagined they would have done. Stuck faithfully to the original plot (though obviously had to cut out substantial chunks but did that well). Did justice to the weepy bits, the tense bits and managed not to make the March family look horribly pious. Well worth buying whether or not you've read the book.

Loved it
I have loved this movie for years and years and was reminded of it when I saw it on TV a little while ago. It's a lovely version of Little Women and my favourite of the ones I've seen. It's sweet, it's well made, there's a great cast, it's family friendly - there are no downsides. Apart from that sad part and if you've seen it you know what I mean. Would highly recommend.
