I have a LG smart TV with record function - however the TV is anything but smart, it records perhaps 1 in 4 programs, with various excuses like it didn't like the USB hard drive to wrong time etc. I needed something to record TV reliably, but without the expense of sky or a 'proper' humax type box.For the price this box fits the bill very well, with a few caveats I'll list. Its about the size of a large book, comes with no leads, a reasonable remote although the buttons are heavy, and bad instructions.Setting up isn't too difficult, just work your way around the setup options and ignore the leaflet, and once set to output in 1080P the picture is excellent. Response to the remote is a bit sluggish, but so is my LG tv.Recordings work well, it accepted every USB device I tried, an old small 16gb thumbstick had a bit of frame judder on playback but it wasn't rejected. I've decided on an old external drive I once used for backups, and that works excellently. The programming guide is pretty good, though you don't get a full screen all channel view like sky, just channel by channel, so its best used in conjunction with a TV times or internet guide. The recordings are not stored with their title either, just a filename made from the date and time of recording. Not easy when it starts to fill up as you may have no idea whats what, and have to press the preview button to see the file play in a small box to find if its the recording you want.I did find something useful - if you remove the drive the files can be also played back on your PC, even the HD recordings, at least using VLC media player which is what I have installed.Issues aside, I'm happy with the device and glad I didn't spend 8x more on a mainstream product.

Cheap and cheerful but don't expect too much
For the price, it's OK. I had an old one for a couple of years which died so I bought a new one recently.Recorded picture quality good.Recording process fiddly, the latest one won't format NTFS any more which means multiple files for long recordings to circumvent the 4GB file size limit.Needs sleep disabling for HD recording because it doesn't "see" the HDD any more when it wakes up. Might be OK with USB memory stick. Every time you power it on you need to configure the HDD for PVR recordings.EPG "page down" function now works, but on the red button and not the yellow one as indicated. Vital because if you select a programme to record from the EPG, it goes back to the start of the EPG once the recording is set up.I bought it to enable occasional recording from FreeView to disk which I can then move to another computer and save/edit. For the purpose it's fine. I could probably live with it as a second TV for occasional use also. For the price I can put up with the quirks but if you will be annoyed by them, don't buy it!

Small, compact, but has all the goods!
Small and compact so didn’t expect too much for the price, which was excellent. I connected the device through a Youview box and to my TV which worked out quickly and rather well. The SD channels are highly acceptable and the HD channels are tremendous really! I inserted a 64gb usb2 thumb drive which worked very well to record, with good quality. A bit of work to do this however compared to the ease of Sky or Youview, but you have to factor in the price of this little gem and be prepared to take just a little longer in the recording department. If you want to keep programmes for a while the change name facility is handy. Do check the guide booklet which is included before charging in thinking you know what to do, it takes only minutes, but helps make your experience stress free. Again for the price this device is remarkable and well worth a look.Mal

Its a cheap Freeview box, that delivers exactly what you'd expect.
The box arrived very promptly and was well packaged. The unit itself is exactly what I thought it would be; a cheap freeview box. The whole feel of the thing is quite plasicky, and you certainly don't feel like you've purchased a premium piece of kit. But. for the price, it would be unreasonable to expect more.Setup was a doddle. Hooked it up to my projector, and the installation screen came straight up. 2-3 minutes later, the scan was complete and we were off and running. The EPG is a bit slow and clunky, and to be honest, would drive me mad if it was my main source of TV. But, for a cinema room which is used intermittently, it does the job. The remote is small and very light, and can be a little unresponsive at a distance.Picture quality is good, even on a 10 foot screen.Overall, you get what you pay for. If you want a quality piece of kit with slick software, you have to spend more. But, for the price, this box represents pretty good value.

Freedom From Contract Entanglement
I decided to review my TV usage and found I was paying for a package called 'Essential' that was simply Freeview and paying a fee for what my TV could already provide as standard, however, as I like certain add-ons (recording, certain channels that were weak where I live etc.) I decide on buying this. Genius move in my opinion. First, after set up, I got 93 extra channels my provider couldn't give me (it varies from signal to signal) and by attaching an external hard drive (bought separately), I get loads more record space than before and can detach the drive and take it with me, (lost loads of classic movies when I had to return the old equipment). Not only does it save a fortune, but the actual box layout figure is peanuts and works like you wouldn't believe! One thing to note, you may have to reformat your TV slightly (e.g. from the 'getting started' mode to smart TV) and it can be a bit overwhelming, but follow the instructions for your TV first, then the box and you should be fine OR, get a chap in, Either way it's worth it, saves money and is really satisfying when it all comes together. Brilliant stuff.
