Fashion Drawing, Second edition: Illustration Techniques for Fashion Designers

I teach fashion drawing and this is easily the best what-it-is and how-to book I own on the subject. I bought it because one of my favourite fashion illustrators features on the cover, expecting it to be more a showcase of contemporary illustration, but what it actually is is a rigorous and amazingly comprehensive guide to the different functions of and techniques involved in fashion illustration. I have recommended this book to other tutors as well as to students.

Having pored over this (weighty) tome many times in the name of aiding my own fashion-centered cartooning, I can safely say that this is by far the definitive book for fashion designers and illustrators alike! We start off with a detailed summary of several decades' worth of fashion and the illustration styles that sprang forth from ever-changing sensibilities. From there, Bryant takes us through several chapters' worth of illustrated guides that are thorough enough to keep the absolute beginner on track, but not so strict that you can't interpret them in your own way (in fact, personal expression is encouraged throughout the book). In addition to the subjective matters of style, design, and colour, there are also sections dealing with various technical aspects of the craft. These are extremely useful, whether you are actually venturing into fashion design, or simply looking to increase your illustrative skillset. As expected from a book concerning the ins and outs of fashion design and illustration, there are numerous sketches, concepts, collages, and illustrations from a great many artists throughout. There is no shortage of inspiration and assignments to keep you stimulated, whether you are stuck for ideas, or simply looking for a fresh perspective on a certain subject. This is by far the best investment you can make in your practise, whatever direction you take!

Great present for a teenager interested in art and fashion

I bought this as a gift for my niece who’s just started studying fashion design and it’s really comprehensive. Whether you’re an enthusiast or somebody with a good deal of experience it is full of handy reference material and really good practical detail. She loves the book and I can see how it’s going to be an invaluable resource for her studies. Recommended.

easy to read and very informative

Very comprehensive fashion illustration book. I like that it has many examples of illustration styles and that it covers fashion illustration for women, men, children and teenagers. It is a modern book with good examples from contemporary illustrators.

I wanted to learn the basics of fashion drawing in a hurry and ordered 5 books. This was at least double the price of the others and the only one I am keeping. It is a very comprehensive book that includes history of fashion and fashion drawing as well as techniques with beautiful illustrations. Mostly it has given me the confidence just to draw my own style. A lovely reference book to have.
