Is this suitable for taking graded exams on?

Hi I can't answer for certain but it would probably be suitable for taking exams up to grade 4 or 5.

Is the 205A descant suitable for complete beginners? It will be for a child.

This is ideal for a beginner. I have used these to teach children as young as six. It is far better than the cheap “toy” recorders which do not keep their tune.

My Mother wants to learn to play - is this good for adults too?

Yes it's a standard size recorder and so right for adults too. Recommended to us by recorder teacher and it's proved good.
