Don't listen to the bad reviews
Really good book. Lots of stories. Amazing drawings. Don't listen to the bad reviews as I nearly did. They explain in the introduction why the stories are out of sync and why some of the colouring is different. The book is great quality and thick and it's thick because it's got loads of content.

Historically significant and tonnes of fun.
If you're interested in Astro Boy this omnibus is a great place to start. This book is a lot of fun. Both the art and stories have aged extremely well. While American comics of the same time period had relatively crude artwork and an insistence on describing every image with captions, the artwork here is crisp and consistent and is relied upon much more to tell the story. "Show don't tell" is very much in evidence here. The stories aren't just dumb kiddie-fare either. Tezuka uses them to explore numerous issues such as prejudice, how we treat animals, etc. I also have to address some of the complaints here (from the US reviews below) about the format of the book. The complaint that it's too small and hard to read doesn't hold water. I have significant sight problems and I found the text to be very clear. The differences in image quality are explained in the book's introduction. Most of the artwork is presented (as it was in Japan) as monochrome line drawings. The "faded" pages are actually pages that were printed in colour in Japan and have been reproduced in greyscale here. It's a shame we don't get the colour images but this is offset by the extremely reasonable price. If I have one other negative to add it's that the stories aren't printed in any kind of chronological order. We start with an origin story written in 1975 (which makes sense). This is followed by stories from 1961-1965 before dropping back to 1958 and then back to 1962. I was hoping to read the earliest stories, which were published from 1951 onwards, but I guess these will be in a later volume. Overall I would still recommend this to anyone with an interest in Manga and Anime. It's one of those rare times that a work is both historically significant and a blast to read. I will definitely be picking up the other volumes.

First time I have actually read the original manga. So well drawn and the translations make sense. These stories do have a depth not usually found in what would be dismissed as simply "kiddie fair" since it deals with human qualities and such high minded things as how we treat one another and deal with non human beings. As timeless as any well thought out and written and drawn. I also like that Mr. Osuma Tezuka introduces each work as if he he is speaking directly to the reader himself. Wish I could have met the great man, but in a way I do reading any of his work or watching their animated versions. One thing else these stories are much longer than the cartoon versions so there is more detail. Though some things were changed for US television so you will find different names for characters and some different story parts too. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Interessant de voir la genèse du fameux dessin animé des années 80. Attention ici le format est assez petit. J’ai beaucoup de mal à lire les bulles dans mon lit le soir à faible luminosité…

This is a great volume of Astronomy stories. Perfect when you need to get lost in a book.
