Timeless: A Century of Iconic Looks

What a beautiful book. If you are passionate or curious about timeless hair, beauty and style through time don’t miss this. This is a thick, gorgeous hardback book. The type you’d want to have out on display. It starts with a brief written and pictorial history about the early years, including some Victorian era facts. It’s then broken into chapters starting in the 1920’s all the way through to a chapter titled the 1980’s and beyond. Each section has lots of gorgeous full page, full colour photographs featuring relevant hair styles and makeup of that era. It gives you written instructions on recreating each style, including what you’ll need to have to hand eg: Bobby pins, hairspray. This is accompanied with drawings of step by step instructions. In my photographs for this review you can see page examples of the finished look with instructions with it. There are some brief details about makeup, like the colours of the era but if you want to really focus on vintage makeup others books are out there. Whether a gift for your Grandma so you can talk about what styles she had, a present for your sister who is vintage obsessed or for you, keen to try timeless looks this is worth every penny. Definitely not a book to hideaway, now then....time to order some bobby pins, hair curlers and hairspray and start practicing! I sense lots of fun coming up. Highly recommended and so much nicer that I had expected.

Such a stunning book! So beautiful and gives a great history to period hair and make up. The step by step illustrations are fantastic to help create the looks for those needing to refresh their technique. The HD photos are great for showing the detail of the different styles too. Brilliant for both professionals in the industry and those who like to do period hair and make up for their own styling/vintage fairs/parties etc. It'll take pride of place in my reference books. Great present! I've bought 9 copies so far as gifts for friends in the film industry, it's such a winner for Hair/Make Up professionals.

This is a comprehensive guide to Makeup and Hair looks from the last Century, as explained by Louise who is not only very talented but passionate about preserving the history of makeup artistry. I was most impressed by the research and accuracy of all the historical information. The directions are clear and concise, so there is something to learn for amateurs and professionals alike. The hairstyles are exquisite but broken down into steps and diagrams that are easy to understand. It is a great gift for any young artist or anyone who loves the glamorous looks of the last century.

This book has great pictures and explanations of beauty products and styles. This is more a guide to the styles rather than a how-to book. Suited for those who are already familiar with make-up and hair products rather than a beginner. This would be an excellent resource for writers who are writing historical fiction.

Delivery was not the quickest, but when the book arrived it was a pleasant surprise.... The condition described as “ used, very good “ was in fact absolutely mint condition, the quality of the paper is very high, the quality of the printing is very high, the standard of the photography is very high. Plus it has hard covers. This wonderful book is easy to negotiate, from 1890s through the decades to 1980s. Worth more than five stars !

Bought for daughter who is doing a make-up course. Book very well presented with good photography and descriptions of the main influences and make up types for each decade from 1920 up to 1990s. Covers hair styles and the make-up that was available at those times. Wish the other books I'd bought were all of this quality.

This book is an absolute dream!! It's a clear and detailed step by step guide for anyone interested in recreating any type of period look. It is very easy to get inaccurate reference material online and this book is what every make-up artist or simply make-up and hair enthusiast has ever wished for! Love everything about it, from the early years products photographs, to the choice of models for each look along with the illustrations to recreate the hair looks. A true Gem!! What a fabulous book...whether your a newbie like me or an experienced professional....this book has something for everyone. Beautifully put together... talented work and an excellent reference to help up your skills.... step by step easy to follow guide of some of the most iconic period looks....an absolute dreamy must have....thank you 💄💋

Das Buch behandelt Frisuren und Make-up von rund 100 Jahren mit ganzseitigen wunderschönen Farbfotos, zahlreichen weiteren Abbildungen und Skizzen. Es gibt ein Vorwort und zu jedem Jahrzehnt eine Einleitung mit den Farben für Lippenstift, Lidschatten und Rouge, die damals modern waren und den zu der Epoche üblichen Formen für Augenbrauen und Lippen. Ebenfalls gibt es zu jedem Jahrzehnt eine Doppelseite mit Fotos von typischen Make-up und Frisier Utensilien. Dies finde ich anschaulich und interessant. Das Buch beginnt um 1900 und endet 1990. Das Verhältnis ist allerdings sehr unausgeglichen: Es gibt leider nur einen Look von 1900 ("Gibson Girl") und mit Abstand am meisten, 14 Looks, aus den 40er Jahren. Ich schreibe absichtlich "Looks", denn es geht, wie im Titel angegeben, um das Gesamtbild, also Frisur und Make-up. Man sollte also wissen, dass es sich nicht um ein Frisurenbuch handelt. Es gibt zwar Skizzen zum Lockenlegen und für Marcel Wellen, jedoch keine Schritt für Schritt Anleitungen. Trotzdem finde ich, dass sich die Frisuren gut nachmachen lassen. Ich als Laie habe die Hälfte davon ausprobiert, wobei ich sie auf meine Haarlänge angepasst habe, da mein Haar wesentlich länger ist, als das der Models (soweit ersichtlich). Auch wenn ich mich über ein, zwei mehr Hochsteckfrisuren aus der Zeit des 1. Weltkriegs und einen Nackenknoten aus den 20er Jahren gefreut hätte, ist es ein schönes, hochwertiges Buch, dass sich auch sehr gut als Geschenk eignet.

É un bel libro. Ne ho altri sui look d’epoca, ma devo dire che gli stili rappresentati sono davvero realistici...non hanno l’aspetto di una mascherata per un raduno di appassionati del Vintage. Hanno davvero il sapore ed i dettagli di quelle epoche. Si capisce che chi lo ha creato lavora per il cinema..e questo da la differenza tra la passione per quello stile e l’esperienza nel ricrearle. Questo è ciò che mancava negli altri libri che possiedo.
